Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai may not be a surfer, but he sure knows how to ride a wave of consumer resentment. The former PlayStation boss spoke at AllThingsD's D11 conference about how Sony plans to approach the PS4.

"The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers," he said, according to The Verge. "If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3."

Hirai's comments contrasted the PS4's gamer-centric reveal to the Xbox One's more broadly focused announcement event. Sony's console will also have some other entertainment apps and functions revealed in coming months, but "it's first and foremost a video game console."

We'll see more of both companies' plans for the future when Xbox One and PS4 return to the spotlight at E3.

This is just rhetoric in response to the Xbox One reveal. Sony has been after having the PlayStation brand being central to the living room since the PS2. It's not like the whole TV thing is really much trouble for MS to put into a console anyway. They've been at it with Media Centre PCs since around 2002 or 2003, which they included and improved with the Xbox One (as you could obviously see lol). Bear in mind that Sony is a huge multimedia conglomerate who has a vested interest in their TV and movie divisions gaining more market share too. You would be delusional to think Sony doesn't want a piece of the action MS is going for. Given that the core gamer crowd are a pretty melodramatic bunch, they're just being a little more quiet about it after the reaction to the XBO reveal. You could argue that Sony is behind the curve on this one. Even Nintendo has been trying to push TVii. Any time a major media event is on the horizon, my message centre mentions how awesome it'll be to watch on TVii. I could even turn my WiiU tablet into a TV remote somehow (I never bothered trying this, but it's there). I'm primarily a PC gamer though, so I'm going to play the wait and see game with those two consoles anyway. Or maybe I won't get into it. I hardly touch my Xbox 360 or PS3 as it is, while my Wii and Wii U end up getting most of my console time thanks to the exclusives. It all depends on how this next gen affects the PC I suppose. Good to know, Sony, if anything, is trying to avoid what the PS3 endured and that's good. Let's see you prove it at E3. Reply Report

Those are pretty words to hear Sony, but I'll be much more trusting once you finally reveal what your strategy regarding used games and DRM is. Because if you end up pretty much doing what the Xbone is doing, then all your sweet-talk won't make that much difference either. At the very least though, Sony at Least bothers with sweet talking to us at all XD Instead of flat out giving us the middle finger with their statements like MS has been doing lately >_> Reply Report

I am happy at least one company is still behind video games. Reply Report

Cyberninja - 3 hours, 52 minutes ago

if anything that company is Nintendo because with them, no one even had to worry about any of the other next gen bs, like a few days ago sony was looking into used game blocking. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 3 hours, 12 minutes ago

"no one even had to worry about any of the other next gen bs"That's exactly right! this also includes the fact that the Wii U has no true Next Gen features AT ALL : DAlso, please refrain from treating rumors as facts until you actually know if they are for real? Sony might well be blocking used games, and if/when we actually know that, then we'll see where we truly stand, but for now, neither you nor I know for sure. Reply Report

Cyberninja - 2 hours, 33 minutes ago

Well what exactly makes a console next gen now anyway? Last I checked it was improvements a to companies hardware which the Wiiu is for Nintendo unless you have some other blanket statement for NextGen, that fits every new console ever. Remember all the Xbox1 rumors that turned out to be true? also I said Sony was looking into it again not they were going to use it, which is definitely not a rumor, since they already have a patent for used game blocking tech, you can even view an article about it here: http://www.gamesradar.com/sony-patents-used-game-blocking-tag-system/ . BladedFalcon - 2 hours, 17 minutes ago

You just answered your own first question yourself: The Wii U is the next gen console FOR NINTENDO. But considering that said improvements are mostly jsut catching up to the rest of the consoles "current" gen, I think it's more than fair to say that Nintendo is a generation behind from anyone else. Also, creating a patent is far away from even considering using such a thing. Much less actually using it. And what I meant is, if the PS4 doesn't actually block used games, then that's what actually matters, and in such a case, the above statements would definitely ring more true. With or without any previous considerations. SO again, till we know what Sony's actual gameplan is before making any accusations.Lastly, about this:"Remember all the Xbox1 rumors that turned out to be true?"Yeah, and I also remember all the rumors that turned out to be completely false, such as this: http://www.gamesradar.com/rumor-xbox-720-always-online-false-backwards-compatible/Which sadly, is no longer readable because GR replaced it with the Xbone's media blowout, but I'm pretty sure you remember when that came out. SO... what's your point? rumors always can be either false or negative, so you can't point to those that turned out to be true as a proof of anything. Reply Report

Cyberninja - 1 hour, 4 minutes ago

You avoided answering the question of what makes something next gen, because going by your reasoning Xbox1 is next gen for Microsoft and PS4 is Sony and just stating the obvious gets us nowhere. Also what are those Next Gen features, you mentioned? Are you talking about streaming because that's not something to be impressed with since you could always do it on the PC. Heck PCs really render the whole gen thing useless because if you have one at Wiiu specs you can play games, if you have one at Xbox1 or PS4 specs you can run games, and if you have one leagues better you can still run games. They also have had any "Next Gen" features long before WiiU,PS4 and Xbox1 even considered them. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who doesn't own a gaming pc, owns a WiiU and intends to get a PS4 eventually. About the whole Sony used games thing I keep saying there is no guarantee either way about the whole used games blocking thing will happen and never once did I say they were going to do. I am just saying it is stupid to believe they aren't looking into it because they are or there would be no patent. Whether they use it or not has yet to be seen as we both have been saying or does me saying: " Sony was looking into it again not they were going to use it, which is definitely not a rumor" or "sony was looking into used game blocking. " mean that I believe Sony is going to do the whole blocking used games thing to you?Lastly on the subject of rumors, most of the more reasonable ones that don't say a company is backing out of the console race tend to be true, like if you remember a few years back the PSP Go technically was a rumor until it was officially confirmed even though by that point we knew everything about it because of a leak. Yes the Xbox 1 isn't always online in the most literal sense of always having to be online to work but once every 24 hours isn't that different. For all we know at the moment the system could always be online and the whole you only have to connect once a day thing could be in cases where internet goes off, without it turning back on. But Ultimately I remember it doesn't matter because I don't care about the Xbox One. Reply Report

Jesus, you might wanna try wording your posts better, because while you often do make good points, it's kinda hard to sort them out when you write whole streams of consciousness like that :PAlso, I don't think I avoided answering the question at all. I mean, it's a rather simple question to answer: Next gen is the next iteration of hardware from a certain product, which in the case of consoles, this usually means improved hardware all around, better graphics as a result, and new or modified features like yes, streaming, or the kinect 2.0, or the Wii U game-pad.So, working with that definition, and comparing the next gen from the main 3 console companies, you can easily see that hardware and features-wise, the Xbone and PS4 seem to be on comparable specs, while the Wii U has inferior hardware specs all around compared with those two, which is what I meant from the very beginning about the Wii U being behind the standard of "next gen" that the other two systems are bringing with them. And I don't understand at all why talking about PC gaming has anything to do in this argument? Yes, we all know that PCs have always been capable of matching and then quickly surpassing the specs of any current console, so how is that news? And dude, the whole thing about the PS4 blocking games? again, you HAVE to know exactly what I meant. You said that Sony is into next gen BS because they were looking into used game blocking. True or not, if they actually DON'T block used games, your point would be rendered irrelevant because what matters are actions, not considerations. Which is why I said to refrain using that as an argument until it actually solidifies into action. Reply Report

Double Fine, Media Molecule, and Capybara Games will appear at the E3-alternative Horizon conference on June 13 in Los Angeles.

Independent developers (Sony owns Media Molecule, but close enough) have had a tremendous influence on video games in the last decade, but E3 still caters mainly to big-budget, traditional projects. Hosted by indie gaming blog Venus Patrol and MOCAtv, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art's TV channel, Horizon will present a lineup of games and studios "as an alternative to what we’ve come to expect from standard E3 fare."

Attending developers--indie and non-indie alike--will present unreleased and unannounced games live to an audience of press and peers, and via livestream to the world.

Double Fine launches Massive Chalice Kickstarter

Double Fine is back on Kickstarter for an all-new project called Massive Chalice. The fantasy game aims to combine the turn-based strategy of games like XCOM and Fire Emblem: Awakening with a generation-spanning, randomly generated campaign, where heroes and their lineage turn the tide against a demon army.

Video game Kickstarters reached the tipping point with the Double Fine Adventure last year. That project (now called Broken Age) is still under development, but Massive Chalice will be handled by a different team within the studio, led by Iron Brigade creator and Brutal Legend designer Brad Muir.

A high-level fantasy/turn-based tactics game is a new tack for the studio. More than 6,000 backers have already shown their support--with more than $230,000 pledged of Massive Chalice's $725,000 goal just hours into the campaign.

A minimum pledge of $20 is required for the PC/Mac/Linux game and early access to a making-of documentary from 2 Player Productions (the same team handling the Broken Age videos).

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says his company is staying away from MMOs outside of Asia because they're just not worth the effort. It partnered with Tencent in China for games like NBA 2K Online, but you won't see them cross the Pacific, GameSpot reports.

"We're actively investing in online MMOs; we're not doing it in the U.S. Why? Because MMOs don't work here," Zenick said at the Cowen Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference in New York today.

"We look at it and say 'How many MMOs have ever been successful in the US?' Two. World of Warcraft and EverQuest. That's kind of a bad slugging percentage," he said.

World of Warcraft's popularity seems to be flagging, but it has outperformed all western MMORPGs to make a grab at its substantial player base since 2004. Bethesda and NCSoft, among others, are still targeting the audience with games like The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar. Both are planned for release this year.

"We've stayed away from that market and instead we went to Asia where at any given time ten or twenty are successful in China generating lots of revenue."

Its because here in the USA, we don't put up with bullcrap like Pay 2 Win, and ridiculous gold prices. They need to focus on making a good game and not making up their investment on day one.And also, if you are focusing on just USA, you are doing it wrong. A good MMO is GLOBAL. Reply Report

I guess this was true but who really cares right? only if it was a game with an epic story, great graphics, engaging dialogue etc.... if it were to have these then i'll buy it..... so i guess i know why this is happening. Reply Report
