Update: Sony has pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles. In a statement, Sony said that it’ll inform users once the problems have been rectified and the update is made available again.

Original story:Don't update your PlayStation 3 to 4.45! Dozens of users on PlayStation's official U.S. forums are reporting that the latest patch, which went live earlier today, is leaving their consoles stuck without an XMB interface.

The firmware update is intended to improve system stability and add options for in-game trophy notifications. It may well do that, but the folks who are stuck looking at the system's sparkly wave pattern without anything to interact with aren't deriving much benefit.

Restarting the system and other recovery attempts do not appear to resolve the issue. If you haven't downloaded the update yet, avoid it until Sony gives the all-clear. If you have downloaded it and can't access the XMB, sit tight until we know more.

We've reached out to Sony for comment on the issue and will update with any response.

I haven't been affected, but nevertheless, don't freak out people. They've pulled out the patch meaning 4.41 is the 'latest'. You can download this patch from the PlayStation website at the Support section, save it on a pen drive, plug it onto the PS3 and start it up in safe mode, then select the option to Install from USB.For those who don't know how to start a PS3 in safe mode, all you've gotta do is hold the power button until you hear the third beep and the console's LED goes red (you'll hear a beep every 5 seconds you mantain the power button pressed - first one means system is on, second means the video has been reset and the *third means it's off), then push and hold it once again until the *third beep comes, which will do a double beep this time, let go of the button and the screen will display a message telling you to plug a controller and hit the PS button to continue. I was over at a friends house playing his ps3 which he had updated and the problems were rather sporadic. It wasn't totally bricked but it was bloody annoying, we had a game of chess while we waited for the xmb to load. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 8 hours, 7 minutes ago

Oh dear...Welp, glad I didn't use my PS3 today and thus was spared from downloading this, sounds like I might not have had a problem, but who knows.Anyway, this sucks majorly, and here's hoping Sony doesn't only fix the patch, but that they can restore the damage done. Otherwise, this is yet another blemish on their part regarding their infrastructure that won't at all inspire confidence in those on the fence of getting a PS4 or not. SPECIALLY if you're going to start charging for online play, Sony better get their shit together and ensure botch-ups like this won't happen then, or whatever advantage the E3 conference gave them is going to be really hindered by this. You were doing so well Sony... Don't fuck it up on yourself... Reply Report

Squander - 3 hours, 44 minutes ago

True that. On the other hand Microsoft receives membership fees since the very beginning - allowing them to successfully support the stability of their online infrastructure. Sony did not charge players for years, I give them huge credit for that. Letting players subscribe for online play was a wise decision, taken into account that PS+ offers so much more value than Live Gold.Let's hope they fix it asap and keep the damage as low as possible. Eightboll812 - 13 minutes ago

Small nitpick...this has nothing to do with the quality of their online network. It has to do with software QA testing. The image itself is messed up, which means it should never have passed QA to ever get posted for download. Software images typically have things like CRC check to verify the integrity of the image after you download it, so your PS3 knows if anything got corrupted during download before it attempts to load and re-write any files on your drive. Mine too works fine. I have been downloading tons of stuff after changing my 80gb to 160gb 7200rpm drive. I think its a WD-Blue from 2007. I first tried a update earlier on the 18th but didn't get anything. Later that day I went to amazon video downloaded and installed some extra stuff when it said it needed a update. I said ok and the Amazon video app froze to where it wouldn't exit on its own with a grey back ground. I held PS button and it allowed me to Quit then. It might have froze and I might have hard powered with PS power switch on back of console. I downloaded installed the update it restarted but the controller was beeping a bunch but unplugging the charge cable and turning console off and back on was still working. Reply Report

Sony pulls PS3 firmware in light of system errors

Sony has pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles. In a statement, Sony said that it’ll inform users once the problems have been rectified and the update is made available again.

A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson said: "We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience."

According to multiple users, downloading PS3 firmware update 4.45 left their consoles stuck without an XMB interface. Restarting the system and other recovery attempts have so far failed to resolve the problem. The firmware update was designed to improve system stability and add options for in-game trophy notifications.

'We could have done more with Zelda II,' Miyamoto says

Shigeru Miyamoto has been making games at Nintendo for more than 30 years. In that time, he has directly overseen dozens of titles, from the landmark Super Mario Bros. to his latest pet project, Pikmin 3. But all those projects don't come without some missed opportunities.

"I wouldn't say that I've ever made a bad game, per se, but a game I think we could have done more with was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link," he told Kotaku.

The sidescrolling/RPG hybrid is a black sheep among the beloved Zelda series. Miyamoto says it never quite took on that vital life of its own.

"When we're designing games, we have our plan for what we're going to design but in our process it evolves and grows from there," Miyamoto said. "In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, unfortunately all we ended up creating was what we had originally planned on paper."

He said hardware limitations were partly to blame: for example, a grating several-second pause when the game transitioned from the overworld to side scrolling segments nixed opportunities to blend the two.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is available on 3DS eShop if you want to see for yourself.

Bethesda says Prey 2 still isn't worth talking about

Sometimes when a publisher and developer go quiet about a game awhile, it means they're waiting to emerge, phoenix-like, with new information, a release date, and a snazzy trailer. That isn't the case for Prey 2, Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines told IGN.

“We appreciate that folks are displeased that we haven’t had any update or any info on Prey 2, but whatever your displeasure is, you can’t even be remotely as unhappy about it as us,” Hines said. “We spent years and millions of dollars and a ton of effort trying to help Human Head make a great Prey 2 game. What we said the last time we said anything was that it’s not up to our quality standards."

And that's still the case Hines said. He didn't address rumors that Arkane Studios, the team behind Dishonored, has taken over work on Prey 2 from Human Head. Whatever it is right now, it's just not good enough to warrant talking about. If and when that changes, Hines said, Bethesda will deliver an update.

"What is the chance that we have some amazing, unbelievable game and we’re just not talking about it for no reason? Zero," he said. "This is a business."

Microsoft has said that first-party Xbox One games will be priced at $59.99. A spokesperson for the company confirmed to Polygon that Microsoft Studios games on the new console will carry the same manufacturer's suggested retail price as Xbox 360 titles have this generation.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton recently told CNBC that PS4 game prices will range from $.99 to $60 games, although SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida wouldn’t confirm this in an interview with Kotaku. Activision and Ubisoft also declined to offer software pricing plans, although we presume they'll follow the platform holders' guidance.

During an E3 2013 analyst call last week, EA COO Peter Moore said he doesn't expect software prices to increase next-gen, noting: "You see a $60 price for a next-gen game whereas we believe [with digital downloads] we can get $70, $80, $90 from the consumer, but it's a $60 price point."

Last Monday, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One will launch in 21 markets this November priced at £430 / $500. The following day, Sony revealed the actual PS4 hardware for the first time at its E3 press conference, where it also announced a Christmas release date and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399.

I was hoping that because of all of the digital downloads and always online checks and restricted used games, the price of games for Xbox One will be considerably less. This seems like the last straw for me as a consumer, Xbox is fading away for me at the moment. Who know's I might pick one up a few years down the line but for instant next gen lovliness, it's looking like PS4. Reply Report

Obscene pricing is obscene. It would be interesting if to see how much valve sell with steam. I know when it is a sale I buy like crazy and I often make impulse purchases. I NEVER do that at a shop where the price is £40-50. Better value, better service = more profit and less piracy. Reply Report

Sad that they don't realize they could eliminate used game sales AND increase profits by eliminating DRM completely and selling new games at $30. They would easily sell triple or quadruple the amount, and no one would even bother trading games in. Reply Report

Read the statement carefully. That's including DLC. They are saying they can get you to pay $60 for the game and then hook you into $10-30 worth of DLC add-on crap, avatars and the like. Which if anything has been learned this gen, it's that Activision somehow managed to easily get $120 out of customers every year. Reply Report

"You see a $60 price for a next-gen game whereas we believe [with digital downloads] we can get $70, $80, $90 from the consumer, but it's a $60 price point."It is a little strangely worded, but it's clear he is referring to add on charges such as DLC. If he was talking about the digital version of the base game, 1) there's no way anyone would buy it if it was $30 more expensive than going to the store and buying a disk version, and 2), the last part of the sentence referred to "$60 price point", which clearly means the game itself remains $60, and the extra money comes from other stuff. The phrase "we can get $70..... from the consumer" is somewhat ambiguous in it's phrasing, but seems to be talking about how they milk you for extras after you buy the game at $60. Reply Report

mafyooz - 7 hours, 14 minutes ago

I think the majority of what he's referring to will indeed be DLC of various quality, (I don't mind extra mission packs that actually expand on a games experience, but I'll never understand why people are willing to pay real money for different coloured costumes and pointless avatars). But this is EA, and on the UK Playstation store at least there's been plenty of examples of them selling digital copies of games at release for £5-£10 more than in a retail store, for no discernible reason, and in the case of Mass Effect they significantly increased the price of the individual games to make the full trilogy version appear to represent more value than it actually did.
