Microsoft is beefing up its Xbox Live reputation tools to make the online community friendlier for Xbox One players. The current system lets players rank one another by stars and block troublesome folks individually, but keeping jerks out of your headphones is like fighting a particularly foul-mouthed tide unless you only play with friends.
"What we're looking at doing is creating a very robust system around reputation and matchmaking," Microsoft senior product manager Mike Lavin told OXM. "If people are in your friends list, we're not touching that, we're just making it easier for you to come together. It's really the anonymous side of things where we're making these investments. Ultimately if there's a few percent of our population that are causing the rest of the population to have a miserable time, we should be able to identify those folks."
Lavin said the new measures will track players over time: on top of several new means of positive encouragement for friendly, welcoming players, bad eggs who show a history of nasty behavior can be isolated. Literally.
New matchmaking algorithms will take into account player reputations, meaning poor sports will be paired with other Debbie Downers. If they keep misbehaving, they'll just descend deeper into Angry-ville.
That said, a group of rabid 12-year-olds can't conspire to cast you into low-rep hell, unless they're willing to wage a long-term campaign. The new reputation system is tougher to exploit.
"Let's just be clear, there is no way at all that a conglomerate of people can conspire to sink your Reputation on the system," Lavin said. "The way that it's built fundamentally stops that. It's very much over a period of time--if we see consistently that people, for instance, don't like playing with you, that you're consistently blocked, that you're the subject of enforcement actions because you're sending naked pictures of yourself to people that don't want naked pictures of you... Blatant things like that have the ability to quickly reduce your Reputation score."

This is the STUPIDEST thing i've ever heard of sure it's a great idea in theory, but what's going to happen is all the genuinely good players along with hackers and jerks are going to all get lumped together and Microsoft is going to lose a large part of their player base. Whose going to want to keep paying for their service when they've been unfairly lost reputation simply because they are better than other players? And we all know that plenty of people are going to lower others reps because they are better than they are. Reply Report

This is a great idea in concept, but I see no way to execute it properly. I was in the top 1% of COD: Blops in domination (just under 45k of 6 millon on xbox... and no I'm not bragging, it's actually sad looking back on it) and my xbox live profile was avoided almost 60% and preferred 40% due to me being "too aggressive". I really don't understand how you can be too aggressive in a game like that, but whatever. I don't play COD anymore, but assuming a similar situation happened in the future, I would rather not be doomed to playing with asshats because of a single game that I might be good at. I don't know how it's going to work, but if the rating comes from users in the same way the 360 does it, I suspect that there are going to be people wrongly labeled as jerks. For instance, I have a slightly bad reputation on my account, I don't quit games nor do I talk shit, yet the other users seem to think otherwise. I guess people just want to avoid you if you are being good at it. I played a lot of competitive multiplayer, but nowadays I'm playing more co-op and my rating is going up. I like the idea, it's not really punishing abusive players, it's just putting them with other jerks. Makes jerks happy to play with other jerks and it makes nice people happy who don't want to play with jerks. Win win ... in theory, lets see how it pans out. Reply Report

So does that mean you get positive reputation for sending naked pictures of yourself to people that do want them?But also, yes they are going to try to "isolate" them, but considering they still want these people's money I doubt it'll be anything all that severe. If you don't have a big enough player pool for the game you're trying to play, you're gonna get matched with these people anyway. I'd rather be matched against nearby asshats than slightly nicer people that are on the opposite side of the globe and not have the match suffer and simply use the convenient mute option.
