StreetPass is great in Japan, where population density and 3DS ownership make for frequent exchanges. It's not so great in the Americas and Europe, where players may feel lucky to see their 3DS' little green LED light up weekly rather than monthly or yearly.

Nintendo has a plan to change that. It involves Starbucks and McDonald's.

"Previously the StreetPass feature required multiple Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode to be in the same location at the same time, but in this framework, you can exchange data with others by visiting the same location even at a different time, so we can certainly expect the use rate of the StreetPass feature to grow significantly," Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata explained in a presentation to analysts this week.

3DS systems connect automatically to 28,000 Wi-Fi access points provided by Starbucks, McDonald's, and others in the U.S., and 24,000 points in Europe. A system update planned to drop by autumn will use these points as "relay stations": when your 3DS connects to one, it will check in with a server and log your presence. When someone else connects to the same point later, the server sets up a StreetPass as if you were there at the same time.

It sounds kind of like an Orwellian database of user check-in locations and times, but hey, at least it means more Puzzle Swap tiles, right?

This is kinda neat, but it probably won't help me. Where are these 24,000 EU hotspots, anyway? I've only ever downloaded one thing through SpotPass whilst out and about before and I don't even know where the hell I connected to (I was walking in a marsh for half the day!) And don't get me started on StreetPass. I've had the 3DS over a year and I've only StreetPassed TEN people. I always get home and, nope, no green light this time. Ugh. I'll never get those stupid pink PuzzleSwap panels. ;_; Reply Report

Unfortunately I doubt this would help much in my area, as I'm pretty sure it's 80% retired people living here, (and there's nothing to attract tourists) but it's a neat idea all the same. Oh and I guess it doesn't help I live in Canada ha. (unless they're planning on bringing that over here later?) Reply Report

This is GENIUS! Though I must admit, I like the rarity of StreetPass as it is right now. It makes going to anime conventions that much more rewarding. I hope this "Ghost StreetPass" feature is optional. Reply Report

woah funky length to do it, would've thought they could've edited the code of pictochat or swapnote if not simply port it from the wiiU. oh wait if they gonna make the 3ds home floaty then never mind i can see it taking as long as it has. the current structure is nice tight and organized just coming up with how to remodel in on small screens seems puzzling and maybe they just aren't settling for functional they're probably finding a way to take advantage of or note it being on the 3dsi can see them messing around with it heavily on the visuals since that was the 3ds's initial gimmickds, wii and wiiU are viewed as typos while 3ds is okayed by spell check...?man craving a game that uses the gyro controls now Reply Report

scratch that i want more streetpass data for fire emblem and compare teams, bring it on world! i can picture myself roaming town for every station now. only thing i confused about, if we won't be there at the same time doesn't that mean i get some one's data while someone else after me who i never encountered gets mine?funky it wont be a trade but a chain. seems like a great system for a club but maybe not for individual's relationships to shine Reply Report

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sets day-one eShop sales record

Animal Crossing: New Leaf set a new record for day-one eShop sales upon its June 9 release in the U.S. Nintendo announced the successful debut in an E3 analyst briefing earlier this week

Sales for 3DS hardware were almost four times greater than the previous week. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata noted that, as players tend to keep up with Animal Crossing games over a long period of time, the success of New Leaf should keep 3DS consoles in many pockets, purses, and backpacks for months to come.

Nintendo also confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will launch on 3DS in November in the Americas and "toward the end of this year" in Europe, and that it still has many unannounced game titles to add to its first-party lineup.

Nintendo's presentation stated that 3DS represented 32 percent of the worldwide hardware market share as of April 2013, up from 29 percent from January to March. Iwata attributed much of this growth to the release of titles like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity in late March.

Xbox One will work in 21 countries at launch. Microsoft today published a list of the regions with Xbox Live support for the new console, which is required to activate and play games.

Games for Microsoft's next-gen system are "are for activation and distribution only in specified geographic regions," Microsoft's pre-order page notes, and you can find them at the bottom of this article.

Microsoft confirmed earlier that the consoles will be region locked, meaning each system can only play games published in its original region. And since the consoles must check in with Xbox Live at least once every 24 hours to play games regardless of their online functionality, the system can't be played outside of Xbox Live's supported regions.

Microsoft plans to expand Xbox One to "high-growth areas" of Asia around late 2014, according to an Engadget report. It also confirmed the console will launch in Japan but did not address timing or other details.

By comparison, Sony confirmed that PlayStation 4 is region-free and can be played with no online connection earlier this week--meaning anywhere you can play a PS3 now, you'll be able to play PS4.

Can this list be edited to show which countries can actually use the 'entertainment' services which are much hyped about?!I think that list wold be very small. So what's the point in this machine?!Also, I tested my bandwidth this morning and it was only 2.3mbs, below their recommendation. Which is funny, because I don't actually 'need' Internet to play games, "apparently". Reply Report

I'm pretty sure this was planned through a financial perspective rather than a desire to be assholes like I think a lot of people are ready to believe. It's not just a games console anymore, it can even be claimed that it's more media center than game console. Considering that, I can see how they might want to place more of their focus on areas developed to the point that a media center actually has a probable profit. I mean, a lot of Africa is not as developed as a rural town in the U.S. Take that for what you will however, as I'm not a geography pro, much less an African geography pro. Reply Report

campinbastard - 13 hours, 36 minutes ago

While I do completely agree with your assessment of the situation, a lot of people are still being shafted by the policies that Microsoft is employing with the Xbox One. At the moment, it's not looking a pretty picture for Microsoft in this console cycle Reply Report

winner2 - 13 hours, 15 minutes ago

You're absolutely right that a lot of people aren't going to be able to take advantage of the xbox, but I'm not so sure they're out of the cycle yet. They're not just aiming at gamers anymore, they're widening their audience. I can't quote an accurate figure on this, but I have a feeling there are a lot more people who are more interested in the other possibilities of including tv service, sports and netflix and whatnot of a media center than the games alone. Not to mention they still have plenty of xbox loyalists and people who just aren't bothered by the policies, such as myself. They have certainly lost a number of potential customers in the past few months, but I think over time the xbox (and I'm assuming it's successors) is going to worm it's way through the entertainment sphere to where microsoft wants it to be. There's a huge asterisk on the "TV" stuff. If by media center, you mean, you still have to have your set top box, and XBox is live TV only, then sure. But I don't even know a person who watches live TV other than sports anymore. They have the same issue that has rendered TiVo virtually irrelevant and obsolete. HDMI is encrypted, with licenses that restrict what passthroughs can do. If you ever wondered why TiVo has no DVR models that are compatible with any digital TV services, that's why. The only models they have are integrated models (with cable cards or that you get from DirecTV), and broadcast TV models. MS has every one of those same limitations in what they can do with TV on the Xbone. It's not 100% awful, but I think a lot of people are thinking the Xbone has TV features it actually doesn't and many will find it far less useful that they expected. The important point here is that gamers who like the TV features (the ones that are really there) will be pleased. However, people who aren't into games, really won't find Xbone to be that one device that replaces everything else. It's very weak when you compare it to TV services that have whole home DVR, multiple HD channel recording, etc. I predict it won't expand their market by much at all. Maybe a few initial sales based on misinformation, but after word gets out about it not being a TV DVR, they won't sell to a non-gamer after that. Reply Report

Leemundo - 3 hours, 40 minutes ago

I'm sure I read that gaming as a medium has started to overtake the film industry?! The initial loss of pre-sales alone will be in the hundred millions. If PS4 is already 4-1 ahead as mentioned above then that's like 4 MILLION x £400 lost, not to mention the fact no Live fee purchased or any 'entertainment' purchased. No used games either?! I bought a sub par Saints Row game for less than £5 while I had GTA, I never would have bought that new, that used game sale encouraged me to buy SR2, SR3 and pre-ordered SR4. That's over £100 of "used game" sales Microsoft and the publisher could be losing. Save this comment.I bet Xbox One won't reach half of the 360's sales in the first three months.£10,000 big ones on it. Reply Report

The word "work" in the title pretty much says everything. So basically, not everybody can even expect the thing to work in their own country. The hell. Enjoy your new doorstop folks. (Okay, I'm exaggerating.)Although to be fair, that is fairly decent coverage of the main areas they could expect sales, but still, the fact that it's region-locked is the main kicker. Plenty of people enjoy the freedom of being able to import games and systems if it means they can get something first, or cheaper, or...at all. In fact, I've never really understood the idea behind region-blocking. Can anyone give me a practical reason for it? If someone wants to spend money importing a game or console, I can't see why the hell not. Reply Report
