Prepare your spatial awareness for further Fez. Polytron Corporation (aka Phil Fish's studio) and composer Disasterpeace revealed that Fez 2 is coming in a brief teaser at the end of E3-alternative Horizon's stage show today.

Fish has offered no further details on the sequel to the hit puzzle-platformer, but somehow we get the feeling it won't be an Xbox Live exclusive.

That last line... Was the PS3 even this universal in its poor reception? I wasn't gaming much then due to college. Also, never played Fez. Should I? Reply Report

First question: No, not really. People still ponied up the cash for it and were happy about it, especially considering its far less frequent tendency to turn into a brick.Second question: Yes. Very yes. Yes you should. To me anyway, Fez was transforming. An absolutely spectacular experience that's mentally engaging on a level few other games could even claim to match. Of course that's just my own little opinion. But you should play it. Seriously. Reply Report

It was mostly a combination of the $600 price tag and Sony's arrogance that left a bad taste in people's mouth. Shortly after launch, they also took out backwards compatibility as well, which didn't help much either. The PS3 had a pretty sparse library of games in it's first year, and the system was hard to program for. Games in general looked and played better on the 360 too. It wasn't until late 2009 that Sony gained traction, but then in early 2010, they got hacked and the PSN was down for nearly a month I think, and their customer's records were breached too.Sony had several years of console dominance previous to that, so they established quite a fanbase in quite a large swatch of the market with what was then a young adult/older teen market. Just about every 17-24 year old I knew went PS3, despite being the weaker system in the launch window, while pretty much everybody I knew outside of that range (both younger and older) went 360, and those that went PS3 did it mainly for Blu-Ray. That was basically what I thought. I'm just amazed by the scathing, but deserved, hate that's basically universal. PS3 was more or less just maligned, at best from what I hear. That's quite a glowing endorsement. I'll probably check it out. Reply Report

I went 360 because it was first and if I had any console allegiance, it was to Nintendo. I wasn't really engaged in the industry enough to truly understand the Gamecube's inferiority in terms of games. Nintendo titles were pretty much all I needed back then. It seems like Microsoft has taken one from Sony's book in winning this gen and letting it go to their heads. They've just managed to be worse about it. And it's pretty amazing to see a community that's usually so divided when it comes to console allegiance so together on this gen. Hardly anyone rushes to defend Xbone. I think the hack was 2011 because that's when I started coming back around with games. L.A. Noire, of all games, brought me back. Well, that, and TDar. Reply Report

XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death Jammed DVD Tray

This repair is for the famous XBOX Red Ring of Death (RROD). When there are three red lights lit up, it is code for a general hardware failure of more then one component. In most cases this is caused from the motherboard warping under heat and causing circuits to open. Microsoft decided to go the cheap route when manufacturing the XBOX 360 and provide an inadequate means of mounting the heat sinks to the CPU and GPU. The “X Clamps” used to mount the heat sink down on top of the processor die are too flimsy and weak to really keep the board from warping when combined with heat.

An easy fix to this is to simply remove those cheap x clamps and replace them with much stronger bolts and nylon washers for spacing.

The first thing that has to be done, is the external casing needs to be removed. Everything is of “snap” together fashion when it comes to the Xbox 360. First remove the face plate. and then the gray sides, and then the top and bottom shell. I won’t go into detail on how to remove them as it can be found all over the internet.  Once all of the plastic is removed and you are down to the metal shell, work can be done. First all of the screws need to be removed from the underside holding the motherboard in place as well as the x clamps. The motherboard screws require a T10 torx and the x clamps require a T8 torx to remove properly. The rear cooling fan can be removed by prying up n the back metal housing. Once all the screws and cooling fans are removed the motherboard can be pulled up and out of the metal housing.

Fully Disassembled

Once the board is removed, those x clamps need to come off. Put a small flat head screw driver in between the clamp and the stud sticking up. Gently turn the screw driver back and forth and eventually the clamp will come off. By the time you get to the third side, it will fall off very easily. Do this for both of the clamps as their is one on the CPU and GPU.

Old Paste

We had some old baked on thermal paste that was tough to remove. The old thermal compound will need to be completely removed from both the top of the processor die and heat sinks. Rubbing alcohol does the job normally and will result in a nice shiny surface to apply fresh new thermal paste.

Thermal Paste

Eight M5 10mm cheese head/pan screws will be needed to remount the heat sinks to the CPU and GPU, four for each. You will also need 16 washers, preferably nylon, for proper spacing. Put one nylon washer onto each screw to start and place each screw threw the motherboards mounting holes.

Screws Spacers

Once each screw is through, place another washer on the inside to provide spacing between the heat sinks and the motherboard. Then tighten each screw in a criss-cross fashion, taking care not to put too much stress on one side.  Get each screw to the point of where it just starts to feel snug, and move on to the next. Once all of the screws have some resistance, tighten them all down a little bit more and evenly. Take note of the motherboard and make sure no warping is occurring from over tightening.

Screws Installed Heatsinks Reinstalled

With the x clamps replaced, their should be no more red ring of death in the future!

Another problem this particular XBOX 360 had, was the DVD drawer would not open anymore. This is typical off pretty much any CD/DVD drive and happens after parts get dirtied up inside over the years. Excessive hair, dust and other debris will cause the tray to not open, but usually a good tap with your hand will get it to pop open.

DVD Wheel

The center wheel inside of the optical drive has a rubber band on it and needs to be cleaned off. Use something like a pair of tweezers to reach inside and remove the rubber band from the large wheel and the small wheel right next to it.

DVD Rubberband

Clean the rubber band with some rubbing alcohol and paper towel to remove any debris from it. Most likely the paper towel will become very dirty in the spot used to clean it as a lot builds up over time. Then use a cue tip and rubbing alcohol to clean the gears inside as well as the track on the bottom side of the DVD tray. You can hold the cue tip up against each gear and open/close the tray by hand to spin the gears around and give them a good clean. Just be sure to not close the drawer all the way and lock it shut.

Cuetip

Once that was cleaned, everything could be put back together and plugged in for a test run. With success the DVD tray will open and close again without physical force, and there will be no more annoying red lights to greet you on the front of the XBOX 360!

If developers and publishers have a problem with used game sales, Reggie Fils-Aime thinks they should make games people don't want to sell. The president of Nintendo of America spoke to Polygon about the controversial issue of used games on next-gen consoles.

Fils-Aime said they don't significantly impact Nintendo's sales. But he can see how they might affect others.

"Certainly, that impacts games that are annualized and candidly also impacts games that are maybe undifferentiated much more than [it] impacts Nintendo content," Fils-Aime said. "Why is that? Because the replayability of our content is super strong. The consumer wants to keep playing Mario Kart. The consumer want to keep playing New Super Mario Bros. They want to keep playing Pikmin. So we see that the trade-in frequency on Nintendo content is much less than the industry average--much, much less. So for us, we have been able to step back and say that we are not taking any technological means to impact trade-in and we are confident that if we build great content, then the consumer will not want to trade in our games."

Microsoft has clarified that it will leave resale restrictions up to publishers on Xbox One, and Sony has said PS4 publishers can continue with used-game-monetizing online passes if they so desire.

Of course, Nintendo's burgeoning digital sales might make staying out of the used game argument a bit easier for the company; Animal Crossing: New Leaf broke day-one eShop sales records when it released on June 9.

"The fact of the matter is, we will see what happens with publishers," Fils-Aime said, "but it seems to me that every major publisher has come and said we don't mind used games."

He hit the nail on the head, if devs stopped making generic shooter # 34, people wouldn't feel the need to trade it in. I know plenty of people who still keep a lot of their old games from the PS2/GC/N64 era because they find those games to be more fun and better than the games released now. Because honestly, eight year olds can't really tell the difference between "Super Mega Bash Mario Dance Swinger Golf Kart Party In space 28" and "Super Mega Bash Mario Dance Swinger Golf Kart Party In space 29", so they don't run out to trade in 28 for the next big thing. The kid knows, the parent knows, and everyone knows but refuses to admit, that if you play one Mario game, you played them all, so why bother trading it in? This is a different mindset form the slightly older crowd that fails to realize that this years "Call To Arms On the Super Secret Future Battlefield Soldiers of the Army's Next War to Win With Valor for Great Justice In the Name of Duty 15" will be the same as last years. This isn't just a quality issue, it requires an entirely different business model for most publishers. Nintendo is the only company that can rely on long-term software sales. It flies in the face of every other profit model which says, "Make huge profits as fast as possible and move on." . It's why I think Nintendo has the best long-term chances of survival. Reply Report

He's completely missing the point of trading in games. People do it because they want money for new games and don't have the disposable income to buy them because they have other expenses. Nintendo doesn't have a problem with used games because there customers are all children and there parents buy all there games. Reply Report

brickman409 - June 13, 2013 1:36 p.m.

Well, Nintendo doesn't annualize their games like EA or Activision. They have alot of series, but they usually have only one or two titles for each series on each console. Reply Report

I can't tell if you are taking the side of "we should block used games" or why we shouldn't, but your example seems to support why we shouldn't, since it is someone trading away used titles to go buy another new one. And the person who is likely buying the used title likely wouldn't buy it at full price anyway, so somehow, money does circulate back to publishers, and they are "denied" money that they wouldn't have made otherwise.Other than that, I don't think he is missing the point. He is saying something I've said, but in different words. Games that are horrible are the ones that end up filling the shelves at Gamestop. There are certain older games that you know you can find 5 or more copies at any Gamestop in town. And that's because there is a statistical relationship between the game being bad and people not wanting to own it. Another category of game that has a high correlation with being traded as a used game are the ones that have very short play times, like a 10 hour single player campaign. So publishers get whacked for producing titles that have limited replayability, but instead of standing up and taking responsibility for producing a poor game, it's the gamer's fault for not wanting to keep the game. It's that greedy little gamer f*** that is ruining the games industry, so we need to shut him down. To me that seems backwards. That's kind of what Reggie is saying, but from a slightly different perspective. Reply Report

I am a nearly 40 year old parent and I do buy all of the games. However, I buy them for ME to play on MY systems. I do let my kids play them as well. I upgraded to a Wii U and a 3DS but kept my Wii and DS for the kids. I keep every one of my Nintendo games. I kept my PS2 for a long time and finally sold it because I just never played it. All my Nintendo systems and games are played on frequently. Their content is great and, at least to me, is fairly timeless. A lot of it (not all) ages very well and stands the test of time.
