Rise of the Triad release date is July 31

Rise of the Triad will release on July 31 for $15. The gorey 1994 shooter remake from Interceptor Entertainment will hit Steam, Good Old Games, and Green Man Gaming with a nostalgia-laden Apogee Throwback Pack in store for pre-orderers.

The fast-paced FPS goes for fast, twitchy action, with plenty of bizarre weaponry like the Excalibat and Drunk Missile retained from the original. But now the gibs are coming at you polygonally!

(What exactly are those eyeballs sticking to and sliding down at 0:34? Is the protagonist protected by a clear plastic sheet, like at a Gallagher show?)

If you'd prefer the original flavor, the Apogee Throwback Pack includes the original Rise of the Triad: Dark War, expansion pack Extreme Rise of the Triad, Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, and Blake Stone: Planet Strike. It's available separately for $10.

UPDATE: Zynga confirmed the news in press release. Don Mattrick will take over as CEO, and Mark Pincus will continue as Zynga's chairman of the board and chief product officer.

The head of Xbox is leaving Microsoft, according to a report from tech news site AllThingsD. Interactive Entertainment Business president Don Mattrick may leave his position to take over ailing social gaming giant Zynga, according to AllThingsD's anonymous sources.

Mattrick was at the center of the Xbox One's reveal in May. He's been with Microsoft since 2007, after occupying several positions at Electronic Arts, though his popularity with gamers has suffered after some blowback to Xbox One's former policies (we thought of 8 ways it could be worse).

The transfer likely isn't in response to those issues however, as the sources indicated Mattrick has been in talks with Zynga for some time. If he does join the San Francisco-based company, he would take over as CEO from founder Mark Pincus.

We've asked Microsoft for comment about these reports, and will update this article with any response.

O.K. That's step one. But if Microsoft really wants to right things and possibly almost double their pre-sales they need to ditch the mandatory Kinect , add a headset and slap a $399 price tag on it. Let people decide if they want a Kinect or not Mr new Xbox president. Reply Report

Redeater - 24 minutes ago

Exactly. The mandatory Kinect is the reason my next console is going to be PS4. They haven't even given us a REASON as to why we need the Kinect in the first place. Reply Report

Was about time someone at Microsoft's Xbox department got fired. Either that or he is voluntarily leaving due to factors such as tension at work as everyone around him uses the "I warned you" card XD Reply Report

antiAntag0nist - 3 hours, 2 minutes ago

Well, didn't expect this to happen. I can't say I hated the man, but he has not done Microsoft any favors since the Xbox One reveal in May. I mean, how can you tell people to NOT buy a new console and stick with last gen and expect nothing to come from it.I wonder who MS will get to replace him though? It could be interesting to see how this pans out. Reply Report

Hope this hasn't caused him any personal life problems, good luck to him at Zynga. Reply Report

Eightboll812 - 6 hours, 30 minutes ago

I believe I called it.People at his level rarely get "fired" publicly. They get golden parachutes, and part of that includes the right to say, "I'm leaving on my own, I didn't get fired."I can see it both ways though. If he is being pushed out for his recent failures, why would Zynga even be contemplating hiring him at this point, if negotiations weren't prior? Yeah, lets hire that guy who just scuttled his entire division, because he has so much experience scuttling businesses, he can help us go down the crapper faster than we already are.... Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 6 hours, 15 minutes ago

Yep, actually, you did indeed call it, I remember. AND I remember being skeptical, but here we are...Also, wasn't Andy Orth fired publicly? Reply Report

Eightboll812 - 5 hours, 23 minutes ago

I read that *Adam* Orth voluntarily resigned, which, like I said above, is how higher ups typically get fired "officially". Also, Adam was openly insulting to people on Twitter, so his hasty departure, while "voluntary" is more correctly interpreted as a firing. I think Mattrick leaving is slightly less obvious a "firing" since the rumor includes a possible new job at Zynga. Reply Report

So he's leaving one sinking ship for another? Last I heard Zynga wasn't doing too well. Lots of lawsuits for ripping off other games and no one wants to play the crap mobile games they put out. Reply Report

I can't stop laughing. This just makes way too much sense. Reply Report

So he decided he needed to work for a company that can directly say "Fuck you" to gamers rather than passively. Makes sense now... Reply Report

Free Fall map comes with Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders

Call of Duty: Ghosts' pre-order map gives a vertigo-inducing look at the game's ever-changing multiplayer arenas. Free Fall is an all-new map (as in, not another Nuketown) which shows off Ghosts' focus on dynamic map events.

Free Fall sets players against each other in a decrepit skyscraper--kind of like a post-apocalyptic Wayside School. The tower is tilting, and as each match progresses it shifts further and further: meaning that shot you were lining up could be blocked by a collapsed elevator shift, and that window you were walking across could be in pieces hundreds of feet down (also you).

"It's a really fun new feature that adds layers of strategy and constantly evolving gameplay options for players," executive producer Mark Rubin said in a release. "And this is just one of the many new approaches we're putting into Ghosts' multiplayer across the board. There's so much more that we look forward to sharing in the weeks to come."

Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on November 5, and PS4 and Xbox One later in the year. Why this decrepit tower is worth fighting over, we have no idea...

First free Xbox Live Games with Gold is Defense Grid: The Awakening

The first Xbox Live Games with Gold title is Defense Grid: The Awakening. The Xbox Live Arcade title normally costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10) but is free for Gold members from July 1 to July 15.

We previously reported that Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed II would kick off the twice-monthly free games program, but that was evidently a mix-up. Microsoft mentioned both titles would be featured when it debuted Games with Gold, but did not say they'd be the first two to appear.

Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb apologized for the disappointment in a Reddit thread about the title, where several users complained about the relatively low-profile game compared to some of PlayStation Plus' offerings.

"I don't work in marketing, but I am going to make them aware of this thread," Hryb wrote.

The program is slated to last through December 2013, though Hryb said it may last longer if it fares well. Either way, you don't have to remain a paid member to play the games.
