Official battery extends Wii U GamePad life to 5-8 hours

The Wii U GamePad is the centerpiece of Nintendo's touch-enabled console, but only as long as its battery holds out. Soon Japanese owners will be able to extend the GamePad's shortlived three-to-five hour battery with an official battery pack (via Ars Technica).

The optional pack provides five to eight hours of life away from the charging cradle, Nintendo claims. It fits in flush with the pad, so there's no extra bulk, but we wouldn't be surprised if it adds some mass to the surprisingly light GamePad.

The pack retails for 3,000 yen, or about $30 or £20, and will start shipping on July 25. We asked Nintendo of America if it has any plans to bring the juiced up batteries and some of the other new accessories (like an official Wii Remote charging dock, finally) overseas, but it had nothing to announce.

New Rain trailer reveals autumn 2013 release

Sony has released a new trailer for Rain, the atmospheric stealth-oriented PS3 adventure from PlayStation C.A.M.P!, the team behind titles including Tokyo Jungle and Echochrome. The game tells the story of a boy attempting to track and rescue a girl being hunted by ghostly creatures in the mysterious “world of rain”. Both characters take the form of silhouettes only visible in the rain, and players interact with the environment, solve puzzles and use the rain to guide and protect them.

The new trailer and fresh screenshots posted above showcase a number of locations, from a church to a brightly lit circus and an abandoned factory. “It is here that the boy discovers that when he walks through mud he can be seen by any enemy and only by walking through a deep rain puddle to wash off the mud will he be able to hide once again,” says associate producer Dais Kawaguchi.

Sony plans to share more about Rain at E3 next month, when it will let attendees go hands-on with the game. Following a look at the title in March, we wrote in this Rain preview: “Rain conveys its theme of uncertainty in a convincing fashion, even with just a few minutes of seeing the game. We're already intrigued by the lonely, depressing world, and its invisible characters.”

Limbo hits Vita next week

The Vita version of award-winning puzzle-platformer Limbo will launch next week, Playdead CEO and co-founder Dino Patti has confirmed. The game will go live on PSN for Sony's portable system on Tuesday, June 5 in the US, priced at $14.99. It'll release the following day in Europe, where it will cost €12.99/£9.99.

Patti said in a post on the PS Blog: "As we approach the third anniversary of Limbo, the game is finally ready for handheld devices. Together, with the talented people at [LittleBigPlanet Vita co-developer] Double Eleven, we at Playdead have been working hard to adapt Limbo to PS Vita without compromising the experience." Patti said in March that the game won't support touchscreen controls as the studio wanted to give mobile players “exactly the same experience” as console ones.

Limbo puts players in the role of a young boy travelling through a hostile 2D black and white world, where he must overcome a series of physics-based puzzles and obstacles in an attempt to discover the fate of his sister. The game first released on Xbox 360 in July 2010, before making its way to PS3, PC and Mac the following year. In our original Limbo review, we called the title “a genuine masterpiece you NEED to experience”. Last year, we even suggested it’s one of the greatest games ever made.

Earlier this week, the official selection list for this year’s E3 IndieCade showcase revealed that Sony plans to release another indie darling, thatgamecompany’s Flower, on Vita.

Flower looks set for Vita release

Flower is to be released on Vita, according to a list of titles set to be shown at this year’s E3 IndieCade showcase, Joystiq reports. First released on PSN for PS3 in 2009, thatgamecompany’s Flower was the second title in a three-game partnership the studio had with Sony. The first was 2007’s Flow and the third was last year’s Journey.

Sony has yet to respond to our request for comment regarding Flower’s release on Vita, but IndieCade’s description of the portable version reads: “Playing as the wind, the player guides and grows a swarm of petals by interacting with other flowers and the surrounding environment. The goals and journey in each level vary, but all involve flight, exploration and interaction with the level. Using simple touch or motion controls, the player guides the lead petal and accumulates a swarm of flower petals as he moves at his own pace within the environment, causing the on-screen world to change.”

We said in our Flower review: “Flower is likely to inspire the sort of purple prose that always appears whenever games skirt the periphery of ‘art’; but to bury the game under a load of pretentious hyperbole is to do it a disservice… This is a beautiful, immediately enjoyable experience in its own right and you shouldn’t let the seeming pretension of the concept put you off… It may barely qualify as a game in the traditional sense but Flower’s evocative world deserves to be experienced by all.”

Speaking last week as Sony confirmed a June 18 US release date for the Vita version of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said the company is “continually searching for the best games - whether brand new titles or ones existing already on PS3 - to bring to PS Vita gamers everywhere”.

Earlier this month, the platform holder also announced that SCE Japan Studio is developing a new Vita exclusive action game called Freedom Wars. And yesterday the company confirmed that it has made the inclusion of Vita Remote Play a necessary requirement for all PS4 games barring those that support specific hardware like PS4 Eye.

The Last of Us DLC and season pass detailed

Naughty Dog will release three The Last of Us DLC packs (one single-player and two multiplayer), which are available to pre-purchase at a discounted rate when bought as part of a newly announced season pass. Priced at $19.99 / €19.99, which represents a 30 per cent saving over purchasing the DLC packs individually, the season pass is now available digitally in the US and will launch later today in Europe when the PlayStation Store updates. It will also be released at retail when the game arrives next month.

Eric Monacelli, community strategist at Naughty Dog, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog: “For the first time ever we’ll be offering single player DLC. The journey and cast of characters in The Last of Us lends itself to thorough narrative exploration and we’ve got more of the story to tell.

“The two other DLC packs will feature multiplayer content in the form of additional multiplayer maps and other expansions. You’ll be hearing about our multiplayer over the next couple of days. It’s an experience that continues the themes, tone and tension from the single player campaign and we can’t wait to tell you more about it.”

Monacelli also detailed a number of exclusive bonuses for season pass buyers designed to offer players a head start in the single player campaign

Increased Crafting Speed Increased Healing Speed 9mm Reload Speed Upgrade Rifle Clip Capacity Upgrade Grounded – exclusive 90min “Making of The Last of Us” documentary

The Last of Us is also now available as a digital pre-order from the US PS Store and will be in Europe later today. The game will be a day one digital download featuring an installer that lets users begin playing once the data is a little over halfway downloaded.

The survival-horror title went gold earlier this month ahead of the Last of Us release date of June 14. A The Last of Us demo included with copies of God of War: Ascension will go live this Friday, May 31, offering early access to one chapter of the game. We got our first hands-on with the title in February - see how we fared in multiple encounters with the infected in this The Last of Us preview.
