Sony applies to certify new PS3 models

Sony has applied for certification of two new PS3 models in South Korea, suggesting the company is considering releasing revised versions of its current-gen console. Kotaku speculates that the new PS3 models (CECH-4205B and CECH-4205C) could be slightly modified versions of the Super Slim PS3 (CECH-4000) featuring smaller nanometer architecture, less power consumption and better cooling. They’re also thought to be regional variations of PS3 model CECH-4200, which appeared on Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications website earlier this month.

Some industry watchers had forecast that Sony’s announcement of a Christmas 2013 PS4 launch window would be accompanied by a PS3 price cut, but PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara recently told GamesIndustry International that such a move isn't currently in the company’s thinking. "There's no plans as yet," he said earlier this month. "The PS3 is a system where it hasn't been particularly easy to get the costs down. We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely can't answer to that.”

New PS3 models and potential price cuts aside, 2013 looks set to be a strong year for the ageing console thanks to some significant Sony investment. The company recently released the excellent The Last of Us, while fellow platform exclusives Beyond: Two Souls and Gran Turismo 6 are also due to launch before Christmas.

Australian trade and investment board Screens NSW has agreed to provide $200,000 in funding for Whore of the Orient, GamesIndustry International reports.

After L.A. Noire, Team Bondi set to work on Whore of the Orient, another mid-20th century cinematic thriller. The studio folded in 2011, the rights to the game and several of its developers were acquired by KMM Interactive Productions, and a lack of funds reportedly led KMM to halt production and lay off staff in April.

"Whore of the Orient is a unique and extraordinary story and game, and we are still actively pursuing the right investor to partner with," KMM co-founder Doug Mitchell told MCV in response to the rumored lay offs.

It appears work on the game can continue with this new round of funding, though at this point it remains an independent production without an announced publisher.

Considering that rumors had Rockstar stepping in to reshape/finish Noire.....I wouldn't expect too much from this.... Reply Report

While I wasn't in love with LA Noire, if Team Bondi is going back to a similar game, they can probably make many improvements. And really, going to Shanghai always means seeing some crazy stuff. I want this game to be offensive and not dancing around any issues, so the title fits it very well. I hope this gets released. Reply Report

I hope the game's connection to LA Noire's development team means that we'll be seeing another awesome story-driven game on par with that good ol' title. That's an... uh... interesting name, too. I think it's kind of daring to have the word 'Whore' in a video game title, even if it isn't particularly offensive given the context. I like it as a title, though! It's different. I wonderi f the game's title might bring on box-art censorship when it hits store shelves? Would parents freak out if they saw the word "Whore" while shopping with their kids at gamestop or best buy? That'll be interesting to see. Reply Report

When Electronic Arts signed an exclusive contract with Disney to make "core" Star Wars games, one pairing made so much sense it was almost a foregone conclusion: DICE and Star Wars: Battlefront.

But EA Games Label executive vice president Patrick Söderlund told CVG that the stars were right only at the specific request of DICE's leadership.

"The DICE guys Karl Magnus Troedsson and Patrick Bach were talking and I told them we were in dialogues with Disney over this deal and they just looked at me and said, "Why haven't you spoken to us? What are you doing? We want to make Battlefront," Söderlund said.

He said the studio is "a very particular place," and he didn't think it would deign to work on a license as opposed a new or existing franchise. But the opportunity to take the reins of the beloved (but battered) Battlefront series--which was very much inspired by DICE's own Battlefield--was too good to resist.

DICE plans to work on the new Battlefront in its Stockholm studio, with several key members from across the history of the Battlefield franchise.

"When it comes to the actual game, the approach we're going to take is it's a rebirth of the brand, it is Star Wars: Battlefront done the DICE way," Söderlund said. "The original Battlefront games actually took a lot of inspiration from Battlefield and they've been publicly open about that. As the guys said, the game is 'coming home'. That's as much as we can say."

I only hope they keep the static health bars. I hate the whole red screen of death thing battlefield 3 did. I know that I shouldn't be able to see well on the verge of death, but it's annoying when I can't see when I need to the most. Reply Report

really curious about how they're going to handle the hero units. it would be a shame to omit them altogether. and is it too much to ask (if included) for more than just one measly map for the hero on hero stuff? Reply Report

They seem to say "Battlefront done the DICE way" with a lot of pride, or at least I read it that way. Battlefront takes a lot of inspiration from Battlefield, but is not exactly Battlefield. It is a little more 'arcady' than Battlefield. With that said, I see Battlefront going full Battlefield clone as a first person shooter. I am not sure how I feel about this, but I wonder how it will play, considering lasers are much slower than bullets. With that said, I hope Battlefront fans do not expect this to be like the older Battlefronts or how Battlefront 3 was going to turn out, but instead, expect it to feel more like a core Battlefield game. Though I hope they try a few new things with this title. I want them to bring back all the cool features in Battlefront 2, such as the Galaxy battle system, and split-screen... and aircraft implemented in some meaningful way. Reply Report

I know, but this is the Star Wars universe we are talking about here. Lasers in Star Wars do not even come close to breaching the sound barrier. Why else do you think that TIE fighters have to line up less than 50 metres away from a X-wing just to hit it :P Reply Report

I think you say that under the impression that DICE seems incapable of making more "arcadey" kinds of games. But I'm fairly sure their history in vehicle design and mechanics for previous Battlefield games such as 1942, '43, and the Bad Company series says otherwise. I have faith that DICE can do this right. I mean, they even helped concoct the online modes for some games in the Need for Speed series. NEED FOR SPEED. Remember Hot Pursuit? Doesn't get much more arcade than that. Reply Report

I cannot stand the way Battlefield plays, so I'm worried about Battlefront being in DICE's hands...on the other hand it is a quality studio and I'm sure they'll do the game justice. Hopefully it plays like the old Battlefront games and not like Battlefield. Reply Report
