Explore The Witness in PS4 developer video

One of the greatest surprises of the PlayStation 4's reveal event was Jonathan Blow. We weren't expecting the creator of Braid to walk on stage, show a trailer of his new game The Witness, and say it would premiere on PS4.

Blow talks about what drew him to the platform in this new "Conversations with Creators" video from PlayStation, and debuts some new footage of the open-world puzzle game.

Blow doesn't actually speak about Sony very much here. But if that reflects on the company's approach to The Witness (i.e, just make the game you want to make and we'll put it on our console), that's a good sign.

Trailer shows Shin Megami Tensei IV's app of the samurai

Shin Megami Tensei IV has a lot going on. Much like the Persona series it spawned, the original line fuses traditional dungeon crawling with some inventive extracurriculars. Get a video look at the game in action here.

No demon-slaying samurai would dream of embarking into the post-apocalyptic Japanese wasteland without a demon fusing app. That's bush league stuff, Atlus--tell us something we don't know.

Check out our first impressions of SMTIV over here, and try it yourself when it hits 3DS on July 16.

Sony Europe advert says “PS4 coming 2013”

An advert placed by Sony in today’s UK Metro newspaper has raised hopes of the European PS4 release date falling in 2013. It reads: "Now is the time. The world's greatest players are going to entertain, create and amaze on the ultimate stage. This year a new generation will push the boundaries of play and share in moments of wonder. This year players will become legends. PS4. Coming 2013."

Sony announced PS4 in February, but to date it has only officially confirmed plans to launch the system this holiday in at least one of Europe, the US and Japan. An Edge report prior to the console’s announcement claimed PS4 would launch in the US and Japan in late 2013 and in Europe in early 2014, citing complexities involved in distribution in the continent. More recently, a Sony insider told CVG that the platform holder has identified Europe as a high-priority territory in the next-gen sales race and will ensure PS4's launch is not delayed into 2014.

In a statement provided to Edge, Sony played down the significance of today's PS4 advert in Metro: "We announced at the PlayStation Meeting event on Feb 20th that PS4 would be coming in 2013… the adverts are simply re-stating that message. More information about PS4 and all PlayStation Platforms will be announced at E3.”

Sony has yet to show PS4’s form factor, but it recently released a console teaser trailer ahead of an expected hardware reveal at its E3 press conference on June 10. Earlier this week, Microsoft took the wraps off its Xbox 360 successor and PS4 rival, Xbox One, which will launch around the world “later this year”.

Ninja Theory's next project is F2P mobile game Fightback

Ninja Theory revealed its latest action-packed project this week. After a tour on PS3 and Xbox 360 with Heavenly Sword and DmC: Devil May Cry, Ninja Theory is going mobile with Fightback.

The free-to-play game borrows an '80s action movie aesthetic to complement its touch-based melee combat and gunplay. Fightback is being published by EA-owned Chillingo.

"Mobile and tablet gaming is a phenomenon that we just couldn’t ignore as a studio and we’re very proud to be working with one of the industry’s heavyweights on bringing Fightback to market," Ninja Theory Product Manager Dominic Matthews said in a statement. "Ninja Theory has always strived for the highest production values and that absolutely remains the case in this exciting new space."

Fightback will hit iOS and Android this summer.

Epic Mickey 2 hits Vita this June

Sony has confirmed a June 18 US release date for the Vita version of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. The handheld edition of the platformer lets players control paint, thinner and Oswald’s electric beam with the touch screen, which is also used to give instructions to AI and navigate menus. Tilt controls are used for the camera and driving, while there’s a Wi-Fi co-op mode for local players.

Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “We think that Epic Mickey 2 will be a great addition to the ever-growing games line-up on PS Vita, and know that we’re continually searching for the best games - whether brand new titles or ones existing already on PS3 - to bring to PS Vita gamers everywhere.”

We were fairly critical of the PS3 version of the game in our Epic Mickey 2 review, but hopefully some of the technical issues have been cleared up in the port. It’s unclear who has put the handheld version together, as series creator Junction Point Studios closed in January.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will get a second chance for a first impression on August 27. The rebuilt MMORPG will hit both PC and PS3 simultaneously.

The standard version will cost $30 on PC, or $40 on PS3. A collector's edition which includes a hardcover art book, special videos and music, collectible art cards, an account security token, and in-game bonus items will go for $70 on PC and $80 on PS3.

You can download the PC version for free if you were one of those unfortunate souls who bought the original FFXIV. No free PS3 version, seeing as the PS3 version never actually came out.

The game is still subscription based at $13 a month, though new accounts receive a 30-day trial period. The beta is free and still accepting applications for sessions this summer.

Hopefully phase 3 will be the final nail in the coffin to convince me to get this. Might finally be able to get back into an MMO for once :| Reply Report

Holy shit! This is still coming out? It's things like this that make me wonder whether Squeenix will survive next gen. They're going to re-release an MMO whose first iteration was universally maligned on a console two months before it becomes obsolete AND charge $12 a month? Whose going to pay $12 a month for that crap? Reply Report

Sometimes the short term memory of gamers/fanboys baffles me. It's kinda stunning to see a rather large amount of people commenting on this of how excited they are and they can't wait to play it... Which, look, I get being cautiously optimistic, or wanting to check it out if you're into MMOs and Final Fantasy, but it's as if the entire catastrophe of the FFXIV launch had never happened, so much so that people are willing to pay money for it before even KNOWING if it'll be good this time around, or if they'll get screwed once again >_>; Reply Report

I honestly can't speak for everyone but I know a lot of people are speaking from experience in the beta. It's not that XIV never happened, it very much did and it was bad, but this isn't the same XIV. You have to understand that the entire game has been reworked from the ground up; new engine, new servers, new maps and environments, all new questing system and a completely reworked combat system. It has nothing in common with the horrible first launch outside of the name and the most basic principles like races and such. It's not about being a fanboy, it's about being excited for a game you're looking forward to. By the same token I could ask you why you're being so negative regarding a product you seem to know very little about. Reply Report

This ^If my time with the beta is indicative of the game as a whole, it's an infinitely better game than 14 was at launch. Reply Report

Okay, a few things:If I remember correctly, most of the people that had played the beta for the original FFXIV were also raving that it was fantastic, and even some sites commented as much. So forgive me if positive reactions from the beta isn't enough to erase my skepticism.Secondly, if they changed virtually everything, why not change the name as well? If they chose to keep calling it FFXIV, you can't really blame me, nor anyone else for always comparing and hold the stigma that the original has on the name. And if I'm being negative, is because Square has brought this upon themselves. Again, if they were making a different game altogether, calling it FFXIV still is a baffling decision that will do the new game no favors at all. It benefits them in no way because the brand recognition in this case is VERY negative. So even if I'm being unfair in distrusting the new game itself, it's not my fault that Square chose to go trough this route. Reply Report

I totally understand the skepticism. I don't mean to imply that I have none myself--I only played for ~30 hours or so, which is next to nothing in an MMO. The monthly fee, though... that I find a bit vexing Reply Report

Tyrlanae - May 23, 2013 2:26 p.m.

The beta from the original did not progress into anything; that was the problem. For a beta it was good, but it never changed. What we got at launch was still a beta. There were a bunch of half measures and "sort of but not quite" ideas that were floating around and supposedly going to be implemented that we never saw. This time around the beta in and of itself is already a playable and fun game. As far as the name goes, I don't know. They added "A Realm Reborn" to signify it's a reboot, and I'm guessing they didn't want to just scrap a numeric entry in the franchise. Not sure if it was a good or a bad call, but it is what it is. I assume they're hoping the fans who have been following the changes and word of mouth will help to counter the stigma of the original. Hell, they've released almost everything to do with this game via video format by now, so if you look for it it's not like anything about this game is a secret. Here's the thing; I don't blame you for skepticism, it's warranted after the failure of the first launch. What I don't like is that you're coming into this game which you obviously know very little about and bashing it just for existing while at the same time chastising those of us who have been following it and are actually excited for it. It's becoming the "cool thing" to hate on Square-Enix, which means that even if they come out with a promising game everyone trashes it just because it's from SE. I'm not convinced how fair that is. Has SE made some bad decisions? Sure. Does that mean that everything that they're doing right now is destined to fail and be terrible? I don't think so. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - May 23, 2013 4:16 p.m.

Yes, that's another thing, far as I can tell, the monthly fee RPG is dying left and right, and yet you have this game, which not only it's charging an initial cost of admission, but a monthly fee right out of the gate... Which to me feels like the least inviting thing they could do, specially considering that being attached to the FF XIV fiasco, you would THINK they'd want to make it so people can check it out without paying first >_>; Reply Report

BladedFalcon - May 23, 2013 4:45 p.m.

Fair enough, you're right in the sense that just because they have been screwing up left and right lately, that doesn't mean they can't actually make something good anymore. Of course they can. And note that from the beginning of my first post, I said "It's entirely okay to want to check the game out, or be cautiously optimistic". If I was all about blind hate, I wouldn't have said that, now would I? ;)Here's the thing, it's not the "cool" thing to hate on square-enix, at least, not in the sense you're making it sound. They have earned every single bit of animosity for the last years considering that all the later entries for the FF franchise have been underwhelming or mixed at best, and the one branch that consistently makes good games for them (Eidos) gets now blamed for the low sales and financial woes of the company. So make no mistake, Square deserves every single bit of scorn it gets.Lastly, I gotta recognize, I don't have a beef with you, nor with any of you that have played the demo and have genuinely enjoyed the game, and know exactly what you're getting for. (Or at least, what you think you'll get based on the demo.) But read the comments in a few other sites, specially on IGN, and tell me that the majority of those people don't sound like they are blindly getting excited for no reason other than they are fans, and probably haven't even tried the demo. THOSE are the people for which my original post was aimed for. Reply Report

Tyrlanae - May 23, 2013 9:15 p.m.

Fair enough. I honestly don't frequent IGN (one of the lowest quality game news sites out there if you ask me) so I haven't been keeping up on the commentary behind XIV over there. I only really frequent GR and Giant Bomb. Your final statement is totally reasonable, however, if there are fans just spewing over this game without having any knowledge about it.As someone who's genuinely excited for this game to launch I guess I'm just tired of seeing it get bashed every time it's mentioned. I swear, anytime you see this game blip on GR the comments are pretty much along the lines of what you and Collander initially wrote. Maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate or maybe I want to put some good words behind this project that Yoshida is sweating to bring back to life. *shrug*Finally, I might be mistaken on this but hasn't SE recently acknowledged that their western branches are the only ones succeeding, and their in-house franchises need to be doing better? I remember reading that but I can't recall from where. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. Either way, I don't do "internet beef" with random anonymous people I don't know, it's so pointless. So no worries, for the most part I always enjoy your commentary on the site and you're generally well informed regarding your opinions (I agree with your opinions of the Xbox One 100%, for example) so I've got nothing against you. Just standing up for a game I see some promise in. :) Reply Report

BladedFalcon - May 23, 2013 10:29 p.m.

Yeah, I don't rely on IGN for actual opinions or reviews at all, I just check it out because whether we like it or not, they're a big company with big resources and do get a ton of info and news faster than most sites, this one included, but yeah I also suppose I have no one to blame but myself if I go down the den of stupidity and despair that is the comments section there >>;And well, you're in your every right to defend a game you believe in, specially when you have good reasons and info to defend it as such. I definitely agree that a lot of my animosity towards the project has to do more with how Squeenix has been handling things, and less to do with the game itself, which IS unfair. As for your Square comments... Well, this article should say it all for you:http://www.gamesradar.com/square-enix-reveals-missed-sales-potential-tomb-raider/I mean... It's pretty clear to me that they either have been mismanaging money terribly if they need those games to make that much money in order to be profitable... (I mean, FUCK, Tomb raider sold more than 4 million in a month, how is that NOT good enough for anyone anymore??) OR they are just shifting the blame to Eidos in order to cover for the expense of their Japanese projects... Which, I'm sorry, it also seems very likely considering that none of their latest Japanese games have sold nearly as well as tomb raider has. Hell, so far,FFXIII-2 didn't even sell half of what TR made in that month. So with that in mind, I think you could see why I have a chip on my shoulder when it comes to Square, no?Anyway, thank you for listening and responding ^^ I know sometimes I may tend to come off as high strung and a bit of an ass, but truth is I also don't seek to make enemies or anything XD I just enjoy a good discussion when I can get one ^^; And well, it's been cool talking to you because as many others here have proven to be, you're very reasonable even if we have differing opinions in some stuff. That, and you did knock some sense into me regarding this game, I'll keep attacking square whenever they deserve it, but if a project of them seems like it's genuinely trying, then I shouldn't take it out on that. So thanks for that, and I'll see you around ^^ Reply Report

Tyrlanae - May 23, 2013 12:44 p.m.

I am so excited for the re-release of this game. The things they have done to this since they brought down the original XIV are truly incredible. It's now shaping up to be one of the most beautiful MMO's I've seen available. This is the game I've been waiting for since I left FFXI years ago. It's hard to believe it even came from the same game, given how much of a travesty the first launch was. Yoshida really went overtime on this project to turn it into the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes. It's a shame the subscription fee and the lackluster performance of the original will deter so many people from experiencing this fantastic reboot. This really has turned into a game worth playing. Reply Report
