Microsoft is poised to pull a 180 on its unpopular Xbox One policies.
"You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc," Microsoft Interactive Entertainment President Don Mattrick wrote on the official Xbox Wire. "The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world."
The console will no longer need to maintain an online connection, and will instead only require one when setting up the system for the first time. Microsoft will impose no additional restrictions on trading or loaning games, all game discs will work on Xbox One like they do on Xbox 360, and--even better than Xbox 360--all region locks have been dropped.
"We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity," Mattrick added. "While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds."
Xbox One's restrictive online and used game policies were roundly ridiculed after the system's debut. Microsoft seems to have taken concerns to heart after Sony brushed off fears of similar restrictions for PlayStation 4 at its E3 conference.

Microsoft couldn't have won no matter what they did. Seriously, fanboys can and do spin ANYTHING into a positive for their platform. Forced to pay for online multiplayer for PS4? That's a good thing! It ensures a robust network! What about when Microsoft does it? Oh those greedy bastards just want money, damn their stable network. That is just one of so many examples already for X1/PS4. I for one am getting an Xbox One simply because Microsoft DID listen and change. I have no delusions they did it for my benefit, the same way I hold no delusions that Sony made the decision at E3 for any other reason other than to one-up Microsoft. Reply Report

But I'm still paying for an Kinect no matter if I wan't it or not? Yes.And I'm still paying more for a console with worse hardware than it's competitor that is cheaper? Yes.Microsoft could implement all these restrictions they beleive in with time? Yes.I'm still not allowed to sue them if I buy the console? No.And Microsoft doesn't feel like they betrayed and took a dump on all of their customers and therefore isn't appologizing? Nope.Well then I'm still sticking with the superior, customer friendly competitor SONY.Microsoft still need to learn to listen from the start, and not just try some BS and hope they will trick us. So they shouldn't have a good start with the X1. PS4 should start out dominating, after that, we move on and see if they learned or they are going to BS us again. But I'm sure there is a lot that doesn't give a F, and is going to buy it anyway, even if they haven't backed out. The same people who would have made MS restrictions cemented on all consoles and afterwards start complaining, like they weren't part of it. Reply Report

....Is.....Is this real? This honestly seems like a late April fools joke, I never imagined Microsoft would actually get rid of this nonsense....Still getting PC, need one that doesn't run on 15 year old cooking oil Reply Report

MS have stated that you can still dowmload a digital copy once you have bought the disc version. I imagine this will lock that copy. I am concerned about buying a preowned copy and finding it i locked.... Reply Report

yay! people can finally shut up and focus on the awesomeness that's coming later this year!already have both preordered, but this is welcome news, nonetheless. i give them props, it takes balls to admit when you're 'wrong'. listening to your customers is smart business practice, regardless of people's (like myself) appreciation for sticking to one's guns.kinda weird, but this has actually diminished my interest in my ps4, just a tad, as i don't really know what games i would even want to play on it at launch. the jury's out on any new ips, and any multiplayer games will be for x1/pc until sony can prove they have improved their online infrastructure. forza will absolutely destroy drive club, and until sony shows it can equal or surpass the xbox's third party quality, it's x1/pc all the way.what appeared to be a possible paradigm shift has instead filled me with a weird sense of deja vu. will the ps4 become an 'exclusives only' box like my ps3? i guess we'll see. What a cocky response from MS, "we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds." I wouldn't call your recent decision to bow down "the best of both worlds" as much as you're simply following the industry standard and not creating a new one based on pure greed. If you don't like MS, go back to your old ways and watch your pre-sales take another hit. What a bunch of jack-asses... Reply Report

Definitely saw this coming, though I had my doubts. I knew it was bound to happen, but at the same time I thought "they wouldn't really just try to reverse everything they've said up until now, would they?"Like people have said, this is complete desperation. They should have saved face and kept their dignity instead of caving in for the sake of their lives. Reply ReportMaturesun - 8 hours, 27 minutes ago
Dude, your reply flip flops more than they did on how people need to move forward with progress to we heard you loud and clear. Was this sarcastic in nature? Reply Report

This just reeks of desperation. I'm happy with my current decision to migrate to the PS4. Unless the have some ridiculously great launch game, this will be the last system I will eventually purchase. Reply Report

I honestly don't know why some people are praising MS on this. If it wasn't for Sony dominating E3 with their lack of DRM we would still be stuck with MS's "deal with it" attitude. Reply Report

I don't think people are praising Microsoft, so much as they are just happy that their voice was heard, and that the change was made. Reply Report
Redeater - 9 hours, 27 minutes ago
You must not be on the same forums or twitter that I am. I'm not saying everyone is praising them.....I'm saying that there inexplicably are people who are.Regardless, it's the right decision but I'm not naive enough to believe it has anything to do with "customer opinion". This had everything to do with Sony. Reply Report
BladedFalcon - 9 hours, 19 minutes ago
Perhaps, but then Sony decision had everything to do with customer opinion. And they HAVE said as much. So... Reply Report

The point.....you missed it.MS released a console with DRM. Sony saw that their customers didn't want DRM and released one without. Do you seriously believe that MS would have back peddled so quickly if Sony had released a DRM console as well? Sony even had the option to find out MS plans on DRM and could have come out with a DRM console after they had found out about the Xbone.Besides.....I wasn't talking about Sony I was talking about MS. I don't understand why you are comparing them. I was just stating that this was a reaction to Sony. While customer opinion was overwhelmingly negative, if Sony had a machine with the same type DRM MS wouldn't have had any sort of reversal due to "customer opinion" Reply Report

This may have sounded "snippier" than I intended. If it does, it's just because I'm fed up with this generations shennanigans and next gen only looks to be worse. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 8 hours, 15 minutes ago
Actually.. you're the one that completely missed my point. You said that it wasn't customer opinion that changed MS's mind, you said taht it was Sony. And while this is probably true, Sony didn't introduce DRM BECAUSE of consumer opinion, and you said this yourself, customers didn't want DRM, so they didn't push it.Hence, indirectly, if you will, but customer opinion DID one way or another influence MS's decision, because Sony took theirs because of it. So call it a domino effect if you want. The point of it is, we got rid of that draconian DRM policy thanks in no small part because people raised their voice. Thus being worth celebrating because it means we can and AVE been heard. Reply Report
avantguardian - 7 hours, 41 minutes ago
again, you're absolutely right, but please, stop using the word draconian in this context. please. Reply ReportShowing 1-20 of 137 comments
