Microsoft is poised to pull a 180 on its unpopular Xbox One policies.

"You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc," Microsoft Interactive Entertainment President Don Mattrick wrote on the official Xbox Wire. "The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world."

The console will no longer need to maintain an online connection, and will instead only require one when setting up the system for the first time. Microsoft will impose no additional restrictions on trading or loaning games, all game discs will work on Xbox One like they do on Xbox 360, and--even better than Xbox 360--all region locks have been dropped.

"We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity," Mattrick added. "While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds."

Xbox One's restrictive online and used game policies were roundly ridiculed after the system's debut. Microsoft seems to have taken concerns to heart after Sony brushed off fears of similar restrictions for PlayStation 4 at its E3 conference.

Microsoft couldn't have won no matter what they did. Seriously, fanboys can and do spin ANYTHING into a positive for their platform. Forced to pay for online multiplayer for PS4? That's a good thing! It ensures a robust network! What about when Microsoft does it? Oh those greedy bastards just want money, damn their stable network. That is just one of so many examples already for X1/PS4. I for one am getting an Xbox One simply because Microsoft DID listen and change. I have no delusions they did it for my benefit, the same way I hold no delusions that Sony made the decision at E3 for any other reason other than to one-up Microsoft. Reply Report

But I'm still paying for an Kinect no matter if I wan't it or not? Yes.And I'm still paying more for a console with worse hardware than it's competitor that is cheaper? Yes.Microsoft could implement all these restrictions they beleive in with time? Yes.I'm still not allowed to sue them if I buy the console? No.And Microsoft doesn't feel like they betrayed and took a dump on all of their customers and therefore isn't appologizing? Nope.Well then I'm still sticking with the superior, customer friendly competitor SONY.Microsoft still need to learn to listen from the start, and not just try some BS and hope they will trick us. So they shouldn't have a good start with the X1. PS4 should start out dominating, after that, we move on and see if they learned or they are going to BS us again. But I'm sure there is a lot that doesn't give a F, and is going to buy it anyway, even if they haven't backed out. The same people who would have made MS restrictions cemented on all consoles and afterwards start complaining, like they weren't part of it. Reply Report

....Is.....Is this real? This honestly seems like a late April fools joke, I never imagined Microsoft would actually get rid of this nonsense....Still getting PC, need one that doesn't run on 15 year old cooking oil Reply Report

MS have stated that you can still dowmload a digital copy once you have bought the disc version. I imagine this will lock that copy. I am concerned about buying a preowned copy and finding it i locked.... Reply Report

yay! people can finally shut up and focus on the awesomeness that's coming later this year!already have both preordered, but this is welcome news, nonetheless. i give them props, it takes balls to admit when you're 'wrong'. listening to your customers is smart business practice, regardless of people's (like myself) appreciation for sticking to one's guns.kinda weird, but this has actually diminished my interest in my ps4, just a tad, as i don't really know what games i would even want to play on it at launch. the jury's out on any new ips, and any multiplayer games will be for x1/pc until sony can prove they have improved their online infrastructure. forza will absolutely destroy drive club, and until sony shows it can equal or surpass the xbox's third party quality, it's x1/pc all the way.what appeared to be a possible paradigm shift has instead filled me with a weird sense of deja vu. will the ps4 become an 'exclusives only' box like my ps3? i guess we'll see. What a cocky response from MS, "we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds." I wouldn't call your recent decision to bow down "the best of both worlds" as much as you're simply following the industry standard and not creating a new one based on pure greed. If you don't like MS, go back to your old ways and watch your pre-sales take another hit. What a bunch of jack-asses... Reply Report

I honestly don't know why some people are praising MS on this. If it wasn't for Sony dominating E3 with their lack of DRM we would still be stuck with MS's "deal with it" attitude. Reply Report

I don't think people are praising Microsoft, so much as they are just happy that their voice was heard, and that the change was made. Reply Report

You must not be on the same forums or twitter that I am. I'm not saying everyone is praising them.....I'm saying that there inexplicably are people who are.Regardless, it's the right decision but I'm not naive enough to believe it has anything to do with "customer opinion". This had everything to do with Sony. Reply Report

Perhaps, but then Sony decision had everything to do with customer opinion. And they HAVE said as much. So... Reply Report

Redeater - 8 hours, 43 minutes ago

The point.....you missed it.MS released a console with DRM. Sony saw that their customers didn't want DRM and released one without. Do you seriously believe that MS would have back peddled so quickly if Sony had released a DRM console as well? Sony even had the option to find out MS plans on DRM and could have come out with a DRM console after they had found out about the Xbone.Besides.....I wasn't talking about Sony I was talking about MS. I don't understand why you are comparing them. I was just stating that this was a reaction to Sony. While customer opinion was overwhelmingly negative, if Sony had a machine with the same type DRM MS wouldn't have had any sort of reversal due to "customer opinion" Reply Report

Redeater - 8 hours, 40 minutes ago

This may have sounded "snippier" than I intended. If it does, it's just because I'm fed up with this generations shennanigans and next gen only looks to be worse. Reply Report

avantguardian - 8 hours, 24 minutes ago

^this is exactly right. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 8 hours, 15 minutes ago

Actually.. you're the one that completely missed my point. You said that it wasn't customer opinion that changed MS's mind, you said taht it was Sony. And while this is probably true, Sony didn't introduce DRM BECAUSE of consumer opinion, and you said this yourself, customers didn't want DRM, so they didn't push it.Hence, indirectly, if you will, but customer opinion DID one way or another influence MS's decision, because Sony took theirs because of it. So call it a domino effect if you want. The point of it is, we got rid of that draconian DRM policy thanks in no small part because people raised their voice. Thus being worth celebrating because it means we can and AVE been heard. Reply Report

avantguardian - 7 hours, 41 minutes ago

again, you're absolutely right, but please, stop using the word draconian in this context. please. Reply Report

Nintendo wins Wii and Wii Fit patent infringement suit

Nintendo has deflected another patent infringement suit against its Wii console and related peripherals. The suit by IA Labs, LLC alleged that Wii Fit's Balance Board used in combination with the Wii Remote infringed on its patent for "an isometric exercise system" with multiple sensors used in a virtual reality scenario.

The case was filed in 2010 and dismissed in March 2012 by a Maryland District Court judge, then dismissed once more by the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit this month. It's been a good few weeks for Nintendo's legal team, which saw another case threatening to halt Wii imports into the U.S. thrown out in May.

“We are very pleased with the court’s decision,” said Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s deputy general counsel, in a statement. “Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We also vigorously defend patent lawsuits, like the IA Labs lawsuit, when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party’s patent.”

IA Labs will be required to pay Nintendo more than $236,000 in attorney's fees.

GameStop is no longer taking in-store reservations for Xbox One. The specialty retailer confirmed to Polygon that demand has already outstripped supply for the consoles's special Day One Edition, planned for launch in November.

"Due to high demand, GameStop is not taking additional store reservations for the Xbox One Day One Edition," the company said in a statement. "In the meantime, the Xbox One wireless controller and top Xbox One games like: Ryse: Son of Rome, Forza Motorsport 5, and Kinect Sports Rivals are available for pre-order at all GameStop stores or online."

GameStop is still accepting pre-orders with a $100 minimum deposit for Microsoft's next-gen console through its website. Store managers who spoke with Polygon said they are still taking local pre-orders for PlayStation 4, and Sony has allocated significantly more units than Microsoft.

Honestly people. You can't take anything regarding this, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, as an indicator of anything.I get that many, including myself, see this as a watershed moment in the gaming industry, that this is one of those times to take a stand so things don't go down the crapper. Xbone "selling out" isn't a big deal. It's really not. First, what did anyone expect? That it wouldn't sell out? It certainly will. There's no question about it. MS will sell millions of these. Millions means they will sell out holiday stock, plus a bunch more. This isn't a harbinger of things to come. It might be, but it probably isn't. Everyone who wants to support MS and killing used games, will go out and show support by buying one. They are retarded, but it's their money. Second, even the Wii U burned through all it's pre-orders in a matter of days. And look at what people are saying about it today? "It has sold horribly and under expectations." Third, the Christmas "toy shortage" phenomenon is exacerbated by people trying to capitalize on it. The stories of people selling consoles for thousands are legendary. Even the fact that most people who tried this got screwed by Wii U last year (there is a minimum margin to profit on Ebay, and the Wii U resell market quickly fell below that threshold after about a week) won't stop people from stockpiling 20 Xbones in their living room hoping to hit it big this year. When you have people buying up every console they can get their hands on, the pre-sales are going to run out quick. It doesn't even mean that all those won't end up as surplus after the Christmas dust settles. But the point is, half of these pre-sales are Ebay resellers.Lastly, if you are concerned about the success of the Xbone and what that means, relax. Just keep spreading the word. Particularly to parents and people who have real jobs. That punk in the Sony video is probably the type that will end up with an Xbone anyway. The hot chick will be on PS4. Anyway, it's the adults that have the long term view. Long term view says, be patient. Long term view also sees the ramifications of buying an Xbone. So if you are an adult too, settle back and "DON'T PANIC" ;-). Also, even if an Xbox fan and committed to getting an Xbone, long term view would say, wait MS out on some of these policies and you will get a better deal out of Xbone in the end. Be rash, and you get exactly what is stated about it today. Bottom line, if you want MS to fail, be an adult gamer, not a gamer. Have perspective, and educate. And put the "damage control minion" forum trolls in their place. Being an adult might mean making an unorthodox move, like for example, canceling your PS4 pre-order, so that others who might be on the fence about console choice around Christmas can get one first, and you can always pick up yours later. Buying 50 actually doesn't help Sony, because Sony will also sell out this Christmas regardless. Let as many PS4s as possible make their way to people who want one. That's the best way to be an adult and help make a difference around the holidays. Cuz honestly, if the console war is determined by which shelf is emptier over Christmas, then the war is being decided by the idiots anyway. Reply Report

The Polygon article sheds a lot of light on the subject, guys. Individual stores are selling out, causing a ripple effect through GS. A quote therein [also pasted below] also indicates that the system is going to have a tiny initial production run.Quoting: "One store manager in California said, "We were only given an allocation of 16 Xbox Ones but we have 60 PlayStation 4s and we're still taking orders." Another in Texas said, "There's no point trying any GameStops. We've stopped that SKU until we get notice." "What caused the initial size of the run, I don't know. It could be a marketing stunt ["If it's sold out, people will want it more"], they could have spun up the lines late, production might have been held back while policy was changed [for a new OS image], who knows.Speaking of, there's now a rumor circulating that they've done a complete 180 in the face of backlash. I thought they were going to stop selling it outright. I mean, they were basically pushing a product that was actively trying to put them out of business. MS just announced that it is backpedaling on its used game and always on stances though, so it's a non-issue. They had no choice really. Reply Report
