Who knows?" Words: Connor Sheridan 21 hours, 50 minutes ago 23 Comments Email Share / Save Share / Save this Article Del.icio.us Reddit.com Facebook Slashdot.org Google Bookmarks N4G Stumbleupon.com Email this Article To: From: Comment: Dead Space 4 isn't in the works, but that doesn't mean the series is dismembered for good. EA Games Label Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund spoke to Eurogamer about the future of Visceral's flagship series last week.
Rumors circulated in March that work on Dead Space 4 was canned after poorer-than-expected sales for Dead Space 3. EA quickly dismissed the rumors as "patently false." Whether the game was ever in development, it certainly isn't now.
EA may let the series cool for a while as the publisher transitions to next-gen development.
"Is that team working on a Dead Space game today? No they're not," Söderlund said. "They're working on something else very exciting. You have to think of it from that perspective. Is it better to put them on the fourth version of a game they've done three previous versions of before? Or is it better to put them on something new that they want to build, that they have passion for?"
At least one of Visceral's teams is starting on a Star Wars project, as part of EA's exclusive licensing deal with Disney. The studio's Montreal branch, which developed Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, was shut down in February.
"Will there be another Dead Space game? Who knows? Have we killed it? No, of course not," Söderlund said. "But right now that dev team is focused on something else that you and other gamers will be very happy with."

They made a huge hit with a survival/horror game, and then proceeded to turn it into an action game over the next 2 iterations. R.I.P. Dead Space (I hope). You had one outstanding game, on mediocre game and finished off with a huge dud, but at least we can always go back to the first game. Reply Report Nines - 4 hours, 24 minutes ago

Need Dead Space 4 announcement and yet somehow it's going to be ruined beyond repair. Reply Report GamesradarsCamelToe - 10 hours, 55 minutes ago
--EA only spends 1 year developing even their bi-annualized Franchises--mark my word--dead space 4 will drop in the 1st quarter of 2015 Reply Report Z-man427 - 14 hours, 21 minutes ago
They're making the next Force Unleashed or they're making 1313. The dismemberments from Dead Space, with a little tweaking, would fit perfectly in the Star Wars world. Reply Report TheFabricOfTime - 7 minutes ago
I believe LucasArts turned 1313 into the next Battlefront game coming out, which DICE is now working on. Reply Report Redeater - 17 hours, 19 minutes ago
Honestly, what in the Christ is it with EA? Why do they publish an original IP that finds success and then insist on changing everything that made the original great in the first place?? Reply Report GamesradarsCamelToe - 10 hours, 53 minutes ago
--EA "rushes" the developers--even the best developers can only do so much at breakneck speed--we shoulda just got dead space 2 this year--and it shoulda been twice as good as dead space 1 Reply Report Redeater - 17 hours, 24 minutes ago
A game that found success with a medium budget, then gets multiplayer, a AAA budget, online passes and forced co-op that makes you miss half of the story if you don't know anyone else with the same game.I wonder if anyone at EA had these things shown to them in bullet point form and actually managed to think they were a good idea. Warning: Spoilers for the Dead Space 3 DLC that expanded upon the Single player campaign - ****** Seriously, skip this post if you haven't completed it ******Without going into the meat of the details - The ending on the DLC episode strongly suggests that the series is over. They put a pretty good endcap on it IMO. I thought it was a pretty damn bold move, and it garnered some respect. Reply Report SirManguydude - 15 hours, 17 minutes ago
I thought it set it up well with maybe one more game. If they didn't plan on making another Dead Space, as was what EA was saying prior to DS3's release, I don't think they would have put out the Awakened DLC. The end of DS3 was fine for leaving the series, the Awakened Ending I felt was like the team was told that they were going to be allowed to make another Dead Space sometime in the future. Can we just get them to make an Aliens game with the gameplay and action/horror style of Dead Space 2? We need something to clean up the mess made by Colonial Marines. Reply Report ObliqueZombie - 19 hours, 20 minutes ago
I still don't understand why people think this series is "dead to them." Do you really think it's going to be just as if not scarier than when you first popped in Dead Space? No!If you were a fan of the series, you would've loved it for the gameplay, the story, Isaac, the lore. As far as I can tell, everything that made Dead Space stand above most games was still there: ace HUD-less system, beyond solid gameplay, and an incredibly sound coupled with gorgeous graphics. Not to mention DS3 took out multiplayer, added a fun co-op system that created a new experience from the solo singleplayer, and had a incredibly deep and malleable crafting system. But hey, I guess opinions are opinions. I loved DS3 as a game, and I acknowledge that it's not as scary. I never expected it to be. Reply Report Danomeon - 16 hours, 48 minutes ago
Well, if someone played them for the gameplay, story, isaac, and lore, Dead Space 3 would have been pretty fine. But a lot of people played for the survival-horror experience as well as a tight and focused single player game. I personally was dissapointed by the loss of tension and horror, but my major gripe was the microtransactions. I can understand paying for additional content down the road, but after getting access to EVERYTHING in the first two games for 60 dollars, players having the otpion to get ahead in the game byspending more money was a dissapointment. Why not design new levels and sell those? That was my major complaint. Reply Report Danomeon - 16 hours, 47 minutes ago
Corrrection: they DID do what I just said... in addition to all of those other charges. :L I don't think both of those have a place here, just the additional levels Reply Report SirManguydude - 15 hours, 13 minutes ago
I agree on so many levels. If DS4 is eventually made, I could see them making the game drastically different with Co-Op. I felt as though DS3's Co-Op was almost a warm up to things to come, with the hallucinations and such. In DS4 I hope that there is co-op but it would be a little more separated, but each other's actions would effect one another. Let's say Carver and Isaac are in different sections of some ship, and Carver runs away from a bunch of Necromorphs, these Necromorphs may pop up in Isaac's area. Or if one of them accidentally releases a special Necromorph, it could terrorize the other player. Reply Report ObliqueZombie - 13 hours, 44 minutes ago
Those weren't necessary microtransactions, though. They were a shortcut for people who are, in my opinion, dumb enough to take it. There's wasn't much--if anything--you could buy in the market that you couldn't already get. The suits and guns were literally just a different skin of the one's that were in the game--and that you could already get, of course. But just because it added such a distasteful business practice doesn't mean it marred the game itself. Reply Report slimjim441 - 19 hours, 44 minutes ago
Series done; I don't see why it's uncertain. Reply Report Redeater - 17 hours, 22 minutes ago
Unlike the first two I only played through the 3rd once and have no desire to go back to it. My biggest bitch was that I wasn't about to get Xbox gold and find someone online just to be able to play the locked out areas in a game I fucking paid full price for.Fuck that noise. Reply Report slimjim441 - 16 hours, 22 minutes ago
Don't get me wrong; I really loved the series as a whole. I thought 3 added just as much to the universe as 1 and 2, just in a different way. Sure it wasn't as horrifying as the first, but that kind of horror is impossible to replicate past one game. But I digress. I don't have anything against 3, I just think that, even with that little shit at the end, the story is done. So what if [spoilers redacted] after he totally got [spoilers redacted] and then you that little voice chatter thing about [spoilers redacted] with [spoilers redacted]. It was the end. If they make a fourth game, I can write it off like it never happened, because it ended at 3, no matter who lived, died, became indoctrinated, murderously envious, or otherwise. And you know what, if they do make Dead Space 4, and it actually happens to kick ass, all the better. I'll enjoy that, too. This is James. T. Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise, signing off.End rant.
