One locked down compound, dozens of armored goons, and a superpowered twenty-something with nothing better to do combine explosively in this new Infamous: Second Son gameplay video. See how Delsin Rowe combines smoke, fire, and good old fashioned chain beatings into a force for liberty.

As you can read in our E3 preview, Delsin isn't one of those woe-is-me-I-have-superpowers types, and you can tell. It looks like he will have some other supernatural sorts to contend with, but darting through the skies and drainage pipes alike as a wisp of smoke ought to keep him out of trouble.

Second Son is a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and it's coming early next year.

I thought this was a new gameplay video, but, its still good stuff nonetheless. I'm really looking forward to this game. Reply Report

graphics and combat don't look next-gen at all, really. However the acrobatics and maneuverability are very eye catching. Obviously the game is still being worked on, I just hope it ends up being as impressive as it should be. Reply Report

Hooooly crap, that looks good. It looks like he needs no recharging of his powers. Though I liked that mechanic in the original games, I don't see what this guy would recharge on.Going through wents as smoke is also pretty cool. :) Reply Report

I remember reading somewhere that recharging his smoke powers would not be as easy Cole's powers in Infamous 1 & 2. Reply Report

Looking sharp! I really do hope we'll see a lot more of supernatural enemies and abilities, since to me the most striking things where when said powers were used, both the gliding and teleporting from Delsin, and the spiral jumps from the enemies. Reply Report

I'll miss riding the rails of the tract as in Infamous 1 & 2 Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 5 hours, 52 minutes ago

I doubt I'll even notice their absence if I can just warp and glide all across the city instead.I mean, riding the rails was neat, but in practice I barely ever used them, because you had to go out of your way to use them, and hell knows if they would even go near where you wanted to go. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but the presence of the train and the rail like things you see around the 3 minute mark imply that it isn't completely gone. I recall hearing that the fire powers are only one of several power sets you have access to so maybe Cole's moveset will make a transition to the next generation. Reply Report

I enjoyed the grinding but after playing the Halloween expansion I found it hard to go back to traveling the city by foot. I never understood why they didn't implement some sort of warping system via electrical boxes. Reply Report

Man. I didn't realize how much current gen games are showing their age until comparing some of them to this :OBut the fact that we have games like The Last of Us running on seven-year-old machines is pretty amazing. Reply Report

Tyrlanae - 8 hours, 45 minutes ago

I was thinking the same exact thing. When the demo started I was all like "oh, shiny CG, wow that looks good" and then they started playing it and I was like "Nope, foot in mouth, that's in game, holy crap."I agree about the Last of Us, as well. After watching Cerny's speech at Gamelab I really look forward to a similar thing happening with the PS4. The whole easy to learn hard to master concept is great for allowing developers to slowly unlock the potential of the system, and continually push the boundaries and bring out great games even near the end of the machines lifespan. I've been playing infamous 2 lately, and while it's good, it has some flaws which I hope this one can fix because it has a lot of potential. Reply Report

BioShock Infinite DLC news coming this month

It seems the excruciating wait for information on BioShock Infinite's promised campaign additions might soon be over, with the news that developer Irrational Games will be revealing details before the end of July.

Creative Director Ken Levine recently explained on Twitter that development of the narrative DLC is going well, but pleaded for patience amongst the game's fanbase while offering no indication of a potential release date. Now however, Joystiq is reporting communication from an Irrational Games rep pledging DLC-related information by the end of the month. While no specific details have been mentioned, it's probably a safe bet to expect a run-down of the three-part DLC's content, along with an announcement of its release date. Though theoretically the current statement could just as easily apply to a Skyhook Avatar accessory and a bikini beachwear reskin for Elizabeth.

More details as we get them.

Mark Cerny on the roots of PS4 design

If you hadn't heard of Mark Cerny before he debuted the PS4, it wouldn't be too surprising. The game consultant hasn't had his name on the front of a box, but his presence has been felt from Atari arcade cabinets to next-gen systems.

Cerny outlined how his wide career experiences influenced his approach to designing PS4 in Barcelona's GameLab conference. Check out his roughly 45-minute long talk below (the PS4 stuff starts at about 34 minutes in, but you won't regret watching the whole thing).

Making PS4 hardware "easy to learn but difficult to master"--i.e., easy to start with, but with plenty of complexity to pick up down the line--figured into the PS4's familiar architecture.

This let Sony bring "time to triangle," or the time it takes to get your game displaying graphics, down to a month or two. That's how long it took to get a game working on PlayStation, and significantly shorter than the six to 12 months needed for PS3 development.

Not all free-to-play games are trojan horses, expertly fashioned to work their way into your habits and drain your bank account. But many are, and virtual economist Ramin Shokrizade has detailed their mechanics in a GamaSutra blog post that is as fascinating as it is stomach turning.

Shokrizade argues there are two different kinds of free-to-play games: skill games and money games. In the former, your ability to advance is mostly dependent on making good decisions. In the latter, your ability to advance is mostly dependent on how much money you spend.

How do they convince you to spend money? One of Shokrizade's favorite examples is "fun pain:" putting your players in an uncomfortable situation, and offering them a way out via cash--like when Puzzle & Dragons lets you avoid losing all the treasure you earned by spending $1 worth of "gems" to get back up.

"If the shift from skill game to money game is done in a subtle enough manner, the brain of the consumer has a hard time realizing that the rules of the game have changed," Shokrizade writes. "If done artfully, the consumer will increasingly spend under the assumption that they are still playing a skill game and 'just need a bit of help.'"

It's a booming market, but there's still money to be made from more savvy consumers. As awareness spreads, hopefully more F2P games will appeal to the latter.

"In the current market, especially with most adults and children not familiar with the nature of these products, the environment is still ripe for fast profits, and likely will continue to be so for a few more years. Note that while these methods can be very successful with young and inexperienced gamers, they find less success with older and more experienced gamers, and this population represents a group with potentially very large gaming budgets."
