E3 sees record attendance, 2014 dates announced

48,200 game industry professionals, analysts, journalists and retailers from 102 countries attended E3 2013 in Los Angeles this week, surpassing last year’s record total of 45,700. Roughly 230 exhibitors showcased their products at E3 2013, which generated nearly $40 million in revenue for the city, according to event owner and organiser the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which has also confirmed that E3 2014 will return to the LA Convention Center from June 10-12.

ESA CEO Michael Gallagher said: “This year’s E3 showcased the best that our industry has to offer and channeled the immense energy, drive, and enthusiasm for video games onto a global stage. Thanks to our members and exhibitors’ boundless capacity for innovation, billions of consumers are seeing the future of our industry through this outstanding landscape of creativity, technology and content.”

By the time E3 2014 rolls around, we’ll have a better idea of the impact of this year’s announcements from the platform holders. Will new Mario, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong games have the desired impact on Nintendo’s flagging Wii U hardware sales? Will pre-owned and online restrictions lead Xbox fans to abandon the brand? And will the positivity surrounding PS4 help Sony reclaim some of the market dominance it held pre-PS3? For a catch up on all of this week’s major talking points, check out our Xbox One E3 2013 press conference recap and highlights, PS4 E3 2013 press conference recap and highlights, and Nintendo Direct E3 2013 recap.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House has suggested that PS4 “demand may well outstrip supply” after the console made all the right headlines at E3 this week. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, the PlayStation boss said Sony has raised internal sales forecasts for the upcoming console following the positive reception shown by consumers and retailers over the past few days.

Sony revealed the actual PS4 hardware for the first time on Tuesday at its E3 press conference, where it also announced a Christmas release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399, which is $100 less than Xbox One’s launch cost. Consumers and retailers alike also reacted positively to the news that PS4 won’t impose restrictions on used games or require regular online check-ins, unlike Microsoft’s console.

SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said GameStop executives had told him the retailer would purchase "every single [PS4] unit" Sony can manufacture, a claim the WSJ verified with a spokesperson for the retailer. Meanwhile, SCE UK MD Fergal Gara told GamesIndustry.biz PS4 isn't in "mass manufacture right now" but that he expected to have “very significant stocks for the UK".

Confusing how people are quoting sales data solely from Amazon when, most likely, Walmart will be the biggest seller of Xbox one and PS4. They have physical presence in almost every town of every state, so it stands to reason that they would be a better measure of sales data. Reply Report

Not to mention Target, Costco (maybe) and best buy. Reply Report

Exactly, and you won't have to wait 2 days to get it via local brick and mortar outlets. Even if Amazon manages to ship two days early so you get it the day of, anyone who really wants it the second it comes out would rather order from a store that has a midnight opening, rather than wait till 4pm for the truck to show up. Amazon didn't even carry the Wii U and all its pre-order craziness. Reply Report

I don't know how they are "breaking records" when out of the top 3, two are the two different PS4 pre-order SKUs, and the #1 is PS4. http://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-video-games/zgbs/videogames/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=themanroomcom-20MS has only the "day one" SKU for pre-order, and Sony has two pre-order SKUs. the launch day is all out, and that is sitting in 3rd. The standard is in the top spot on Amazon. So go figure. If you don't like it sitting at number 2, you can go pre-order another :-)All this is irrelevant anyway. The whole toy shortage at Christmas stuff is now so ridiculous, you can't tell anything until the dust settles. If you watch Ebay, you see people who show pictures of piles of stuff in their living room. And last year, people ended up sitting on their Wii Us because the retailers managed to keep getting new stock. After the first week, only idiots bought on Ebay, because the market fell out. And that's with probably several hundred thousand units sitting in living rooms unsold. The "shortage" is a contrived shortage from all the people trying to make it big with reselling on Ebay. They soak up all the launch units, CREATE the shortage, then try to play the hero on Ebay. Even last year, the Wii U pre-order expectations of Gamestop alone was over 1 million on the waitlist (that's after the pre-order was filled). They were saying something like after Jan before you could even get one. And yes, if that wasn't stressed enough, that was the **Wii U** we are talking about. The hype was ridiculous. It's normal for people to buy 2 or 3 knowing they have a few weeks to watch the market and sell at inflated prices if Ebay gets crazy, and return it if not. There's no risk at all. The fact that Xbone day one editions are still even open for pre-order is embarrassing. Reply Report

I'm not opposed to the XBone (my plan is actually to get the PS4 this year and the XBone next year), but I disagree that honest, legitimate consumers who don't pirate games have to bare the brunt of these sorts of protections for game developers and publishers when hackers and those who do pirate games will just find a way around it at some point. ParagonT - 5 hours, 33 minutes ago

That makes absolutely no sense... How can it be called "security" when they're infringing on your rights? Does that sound like its making you feel safer? If losing your rights equates to security, then there's nothing left to protect. Derp!On another note, this has less to do with rights and more to do with interests because we don't 'have' to buy their system. Which is why most of us are not going to buying the Xbox One. #Deal With It Reply Report

I've said this before and I'll say it again....if you are a die hard fanboy you are a fucking idiot. I have preferred the Xbox for the last 2 generations. While I plan on getting an XBone I will be buying a PS4 first and the majority of my game purchases will be for the PS4. (The licensing fees are how they make their money anyways.)People like myself are "dealing with it" by moving to the PS4. If you are so blinded by rabid fanboyism that you can't see how MS isn't putting the customer first anymore, that's cool. Stick with the Xbone. I'll see the rest of you on the PSN. Reply Report

100% correct. Sometimes hardware manufacturers intentionally reduce the supply size in order to be able to say that they've "sold out everywhere" which makes the launch look much more successful than they may be. Sony, MS, and Nintendo do not want a bunch of machines sitting on shelves because then it looks more like no one wants them as opposed to having empty shelves where it looks like everyone wants one. General Zod is next Injustice DLC character

The next DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us will be General Zod. The identity of the character was revealed on Conan O'Brien (jump to the 1m 25sec mark in the video), with the show claiming it will be available in July. Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon later said via Twitter that a Zod gameplay video will be released next week.

Zod will be the fourth DLC character for Injustice following Lobo, Batgirl and most recently Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion. Priced at 1200 MSP (£10.28 / €14.40 / $15.00) on Xbox 360 and £11.99 on PS3, the Injustice DLC season pass offers access to the four characters for the price of three. NetherRealm has said it expects to release Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC on Wii U this summer.

3D Realms sues Gearbox over Duke Nukem royalties

Original Duke Nukem Forever studio 3D Realms has sued Gearbox for over $2 million in royalties it claims remain unpaid following the Borderlands maker’s acquisition of the rights to the property in 2010. According to Law360, 3D Realms filed a breach of contract suit last Friday in a Texas state court, in which it alleged that Gearbox has failed to pay money owed and also blocked an independent audit of the royalties it has earned.

The complaint says: “3D Realms has therefore been required to file this lawsuit to enforce the purchase agreement, to recover the amounts due and owing from Gearbox and to enforce the audit right provided by the agreement to enable it to conduct an audit of Gearbox's royalties.”

Gearbox, which went on to complete development of the critical flop some 14 years after work on the game began, denied 3D Realms' allegations in a statement provided to Law360. It said: "The reality is that 3D Realms received the full benefit of its bargain. Gearbox, in fulfillment of its commitments, enriched 3D Realms, saved 3DR from its debts and rescued 3DR from its failed dozen plus year attempt to ship [video game] Duke Nukem Forever. Everyone wished that 3DR's game was better received by the market for the benefit of gamers and profit to its creators. While 3DR might not wish the reality that the results make clear, 3DR turned out to be the only beneficiary of the deal. Gearbox Software, meanwhile, experienced damage to its credibility and loss of its money.”

In June 2011, we wrote in our Duke Nukem Forever review: “Duke Nukem Forever’s world-record development time has produced an ugly, buggy shooter that veers back and forth between enjoyably average and outright boring, with occasional surges of greatness along the way.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts looks set for Wii U

Wii U has lacked the level of third party software support Nintendo and early adopters would have liked in the console’s first six months of availability, but it appears that one of the biggest upcoming blockbusters is headed to the platform. While we’re still awaiting official word from publisher Activision, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin has seemingly confirmed plans to launch Call of Duty Ghosts on Wii U.

Asked to confirm which platforms the shooter is coming to and when, Rubin told GameSpot: "Right now, we've only announced current-gen and PC as being November 5." Pushed on whether a Wii U version would sit in the current or next-gen “bin”, the Infinity Ward developer said: "It's probably in the next-gen bin, but we're not actually talking about Wii U yet because we want to keep it mysterious. It's PR guys, it's not my fault." Rubin went on to say that Ghosts will be available as a launch day game on Xbox One and PS4.

Activision showed off fresh Call of Duty: Ghosts gameplay footage during a pre-E3 livestream aired on Sunday. The campaign’s big new feature is the addition of a controllable combat dog called Riley. Rubin told GameSpot that Infinity Ward plans to heavily showcase the title’s multiplayer component in the next couple of months.

If your internet connection can't meet Xbox One's requirements, Microsoft advises you stick with Xbox 360. Both Microsoft Interactive Entertainment President Don Mattrick and Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer stressed the benefits of Xbox One's approach versus its potential drawbacks in separate interviews.

"It's something that when people experience it, it's easier than having people like me describe it," Mattrick said in a GameTrailers interview before the company's E3 press conference. "It really is powerful, and we did a lot of testing, and a lot of consumer research, and we think we made a really good choice."

"Fortunately, we have a product for people who can't get some form of connectivity, and it's called Xbox 360," Mattrick added. "If you have zero access to the internet, that is an offline device."

Phil Spencer used a cell phone analogy in an interview with Destructoid: if you live somewhere without good reception, you won't buy a cell phone. He also recommended Xbox 360 for players whose online connections aren't up to the task.

"The 360 ecosystem is a great ecosystem for somebody that's in a purely disconnected state for long periods of time," Spencer said. "We have built a natively connected device with Xbox One and we think the experiences are moving in that direction."

Whether consumers move on to Microsoft's vision of a connected future or prefer Sony's more flexible online approach remains to be seen.

Microsoft must have done all their research and focus groups with online surveys....Just wait until the first instance of a hack on the system (with big brother kinect you know someone will try) and then Microsoft will be forced to shut down the servers like all companies do to assess the situation while the hackers are cut off. Meanwhile every single Xbox One in the world will turn into a doorstop once it's been 24 hours since their last check in and indefinitely until the servers are back up. At least during the PSN outage the actual system still worked. They also neglect to acknowledge that even some people who have internet can't necessarily get their console hooked up to it. Plenty of people really on wifi these days, and a lot of the younger demographics don't always have good enough signal to reach their console from the room their allowed to have it in.And which console are parents more likely to get for their kids? One of the one's that works the moment you plug it in, or the one that requires you have it connected to the internet and have it's ever watching camera plugged in and turned on? Reply Report

In Microsoft's defense...they have a point here. I mean, what amount of the legitimate gaming crowd DOESN'T have access to internet at least once a day? Even the more casual gamers would most likely have internet connections of some sort. It's still a ridiculous requirement for the console's basic functionality, and the PR is being handled atrociously. But I'm sure that it won't be (much of) an actual issue by the time people have their XBones. Reply Report

It doesn't matter whether you have internet or not nor how fast it is. As Diablo 3 and SimCity show it is the servers that are the real issue. Granted this is bypassed by the 24 hour check-in system but there are still 2 major concerns:1) If Xbone sells decently (which it will due to uninformed consumers & fanboys) Microsoft will think that if gamers accept 24 hour check-ins, they will accept always-on DRM for the next generation.2) They are trying to justify it by integrating cloud computing within games (a la Forza 5 AI). These will require always-on internet and will therefore be broken games due to inadequate servers or the quality of experience will massively drop as your internet connection does: why develop a serviceable AI at the cost of development time when it will be mostly unused? The Xbone is a poor product which has had a poor strategy poorly executed. If seen to be a success - or merely not a failure - the industry as a whole will follow its path of draconian policies. It is in the interest of gamers that this system fails and fails badly, thus scaring other companies from similar policies, resulting in a quick replacement and maybe even giving Nintendo a foothold in the market. The Mad Prophet - 14 hours, 16 minutes ago

You've painted quite the slippery slope, for someone that has neither seen, much less used, the console. First, you make the biased statement that it will be bought only by 'uninformed consumers & fanboys', implying that your opinion is the only one that counts and you can't possibly be wrong. Hopefully you can see the flaw in this logic.Second, who cares if it is "always on"? That's where the world is heading, and not by force either. People WANT to stay connected across devices as a matter of convenience. By the time the NEXT generation rolls around, the number of 'offline' customers will be even more marginal than they are today. You can't expect companies to only cater to the minority when it inconveniences everyone else. Finally, you seem to think that 'giving Nintendo a foothold in the market' is the solution to the sins of consoles staying connected. Nintendo, a company that has been beating the Mario and Zelda horses for 20+ years, whose 'next gen' system is barely on par with last gen. This is your solution? Are you still on dial-up, too?I propose a different solution: try keeping your paranoia in check and form an objective opinion only after all the facts are available. Reply Report

One of the biggest reasons to buy a PS4 over an Xbox One for me is the non-mandatory nature of motion controls on the Playstation platform. ---------------------(1) According to Microsoft's own figures, they sold about 24 million Kinects as of February 2013. You'll also know that Microsoft has so far sold about 78 million Xbox 360s. That means that in simple terms, less than one third of Xbox 360 owners even have a Kinect. Even then, we can't guarantee that everybody who bought the Kinect actually uses it very much. Despite these figures that Microsoft published themselves, they are pushing ahead with making Kinect a mandatory purchase (by making it bundled with the system). In the case of Sony, they announced in November 2012 that they had sold 70 million PS3s and 15 million PS Moves. This is clearly far worse than a third of PS3 owners but at least Fergal Gara of Sony UK said in March 2012 that PS Move had not quite lived up to its expectations. We didn't hear anything like that from Microsoft with Kinect. In light of that, the PS4 will be sold without the Move or Eye, but people who already bought into the Move will be at advantage as they can use it with the PS4. They will have to buy the Eye if they want it but it apparently costs £54 so it doesn't exactly break the bank. The key thing here is that Sony is giving the consumer the choice to decide whether they want to buy PS Eye and PS Move. The Dual Shock 4 has a lightbar that can be tracked by the PS Eye but that's just there in case you want to buy the PS Eye and it's never actually forced upon you. I'm sure there will be bundles where you can get the PS4, Eye and Move for a discounted price because there will be people who want it, but the fact of the matter is they are not forcing it upon people and people will like that. ---------------------While Microsoft is spouting all of this spiel about "Oh if all the owners have Kinect then developers can make better use of it knowing that it won't go to waste" etc, the way I see is that they recognise that the majority of consumers would NOT buy into Kinect if it were an optional add-on. Even before any of the used-game and always-online stuff, the fact they were forcing Kinect upon us turned me off completely. Maybe people who reply to me will say "Well I liked the Kinect.. I see the value in". That's fine if YOU like it. Two thirds of Xbox 360 owners will disagree with you and YOU will be in the minority. Microsoft is not forcing Kinect on us because 1/3 of their installed base bought it, they are forcing it on us because they WANTED to force it on us. Reply Report
