Transistor leads the charge on indie PS4 console exclusives

At Sony's E3 2013 press conference, indies were out in force. To show that it's heavily invested in the indie scene, Sony rattled off a long list of games that will be coming to the PS4 as console exclusives. The first among them: Transistor, from Bastion creators Supergiant Games, which will be coming to the PS4 early next year.

The hits just kept on coming. Artistic roguelike Don't Starve, the retro shooter Mercenary Kings, the bizarrely goofy Octodad: Dadliest Catch, isometric shooter-fighter-hybrid Secret Ponchos, horrifying first-person fleeing simulator Outlast, the HD remake Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New N' Tasty!, top-down space shooter Galaxy, and a zombie adventure game will all be coming to the PS4 within the year. It's enough indie goodness to make your head spin. As an added bonus, Don't Starve, Outlast, and Secret Ponchos will all be given to PS Plus members for free over the months following the PS4's release.

We'll be playing as much as we can of all these indie standouts, so be sure to check back for more of our impressions.

Kingdom Hearts 3 in development for the PlayStation 4, for real this time

Final Fantasy XV? Whatever. Metal Gear Solid V? Pfft. Old. The real news today comes in the form of a teaser trailer for Kingdom Hearts III, a game that is actually, totally, really, seriously in development. After years of murmurs and denials, Square and Disney have finally gotten back together to give us the next generation of Sora's quest to destroy the Heartless (and steal our hearts).

At first, the trailer was all, like, "here are logos from other Kingdom Hearts games to make you think this is going to be another HD remake," and then this happened:

And we were like, "hey, we don't remember that from Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop 352/Chains of Memories. Think it might be from... no, it couldn't be."

And then, all of a sudden, this happened:

And we were like, "wait a second, it couldn't possibly... no..."

And then:

Boom! Kingdom Hearts III. As we live and breathe. It's currently "in development" for the PlayStation 4. No launch window was given, but we're going to suggest you not hold your breath, as it might be a while. A... long while.

PS4 doesn't restrict used games or require an online connection

PlayStation 4 will impose no new restrictions on used games, and you don't have to be online to play it. Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton grinned onstage at Sony's E3 press conference as he countered many gamer's greatest concerns with the next generation.

"We believe in the model that people embrace today with PlayStation 3, and continue to demand," Tretton said.

Users who purchase a disc-based game keep the rights to that game: they can trade it in at retail, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever.

And they'll be able to play single-player games offline forever--no 24 hour window like Xbox One. The gauntlet has been dropped.
