Shadow Warrior brings a sword to old-school FPS gunfights

Bringing Shadow Warrior forth from 1997 is a unique challenge for Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hogs and publishing label Devolver Digital. The 3D Realms shooter is known about as well for its low-brow Asian jokes and cultural misappropriations as it is for its intense combat and exotic arsenal.

"The original game had some questionable humor that we're walking away from, but we're keeping that sense of razor wit that Lo Wang, the main character, has," Devolver Digital VP of Marketing Nigel Lowrie told us.

Lo Wang will have guns-a-plenty, but the real star of the show is the katana. This is no one-hit knife kill: each slash is negotiated individually, with different moves done through fancy footwork and upgradeable combos. Lead writer Jan Bartkowicz said Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was a major inspiration for some of Shadow Warrior's sword-swinging controls.

It's a good thing, since Lo Wang will have plenty of slicing and dicing to do. Armies of demons (and some unfriendly Yakuza) bear down on him relentlessly. But there's no cover system here, just a lot of targets that need killing fast. Targets that will--in a loving nod to the gorey original--sever and explode into gobs of giblets based on how they're cut down or shot up.

Shadow Warrior will make a playable appearance at E3, and you can get some Wang for yourself this fall on PC. It's also slated for next-gen consoles in 2014.

Nintendo plans playable E3 Wii U demos at Best Buy locations

Just because Nintendo won't try to dazzle fans and media at its own glitzy E3 press conference this year doesn't mean there's nothing to show.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime announced in today's Nintendo Direct that North American and Canadian gamers can try upcoming games themselves at their friendly neighborhood Best Buy.

"In the past, we've focused the E3 hands-on experience on those attending the event," Fils-Aime said. "But this year, we're making E3 for the people. And we want to make sure you get the chance to try our games, as well."

More than 100 Best Buy locations will host demo units for "select unreleased Wii U games" throughout the week of E3, which begins June 11. Fils-Aime said Nintendo will reveal more about which games and locations will be included in the weeks leading up to the event.

Power to the people! Definitely still look at our stuff, though. Please?

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has released a five-minute trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins. The video shows Batman taking out a number of goons before facing off against Deathstroke and squaring up to Black Mask. Announced last month and due for release on October 25, Arkham Origins is set before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals. It stars a young and unrefined Batman who faces a defining moment in his early crime fighting career when eight assassins are dispatched to kill him.

The prequel is in the works at Warner Bros. Games Montreal, rather than former series developer Rocksteady Studios. Among other changes, Origins ditches the classic Batman voice actors in favour of some new blood. We’ve seen the game and the results are a bit mixed. If you're looking for more information you should check out our Batman: Arkham Origins preview, in which we discuss the new weapons and locations we recently saw when we went hands-on with the upcoming open-world adventure.

Additionally, Warner confirmed today that Deathstroke will be a fully playable character in the game’s challenge mode. Fans who pre-order the game on Xbox 360, PS3 or PC will receive exclusive early access to the Deathstroke DLC pack.

I want this to be good, but this being good will depend on how much they get right compared to the previous games. I don't think anything less than the same kind of quality as Arkham City will suffice. The changes kind of scare me, but it could be fun playing as a more brutal Batman, one less refined. I do dig the story too. The assassins angle is cool and could bring some really nifty villains to the forefront. Reply Report

Sigh... I don't like trailers that have no gameplay footage at all but at least it's better then a live action trailer. But I am also getting really annoyed at pre-order bonuses. I don't mind if it's something small like a extra costume or weapons but with an extra damage increasing sticker but if it's something as cool as playing as Deathstroke I feel like I'm being ripped off. Other than that I am looking forward to seeing the game and possibly buying it. Reply Report

Shouldve made a side story for Deathstroke. More in depth then the Catwoman one in Arkham City Reply Report

Ah. Well, in that case, I agree completely. It would be pretty cool if they had a Deathstroke side-story. Reply Report

Hm, kinda wish to have seen actual gameplay footage, but can't be denied that the trailer was beautifully made, that fight between Batman and Deathstroke was badass and easily better than all the fights seen in actual batman films combined. Here's just hoping that at least some of that gets translated into actual gameplay. I'd love to be able to break a sword like that in game. Reply Report

Indeed - Rocksteady got everyone in the mood for AC with a wonderful CG trailer (where Batman squared off against the TIGER Mercs) and I'm really getting the same vibe from this trailer. I wouldn't be surprised if Warner Bros. Montreal extend Bat's "Disarm and Destroy" move to include swords, so you may just get your wish.N.B. Disarm and Destroy is the best move in any action game, ever. Reply Report

UK Chart: Metro Last Light debuts at No.1

Metro Last Light claimed the top spot on the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended May 18. However, retail monitor Chart-Track noted today that the Metro 2033 follow-up didn’t match the first week sales of its predecessor, which only managed to debut at No.5 back in week 11 of 2010. The post apocalyptic shooter sequel knocked fellow Deep Silver game Dead Island: Riptide down to No.2 following three weeks at the top of the chart, while retailer promotions helped FIFA 13 jump to No.3.

The week’s second-highest new entry was fourth-placed 3DS exclusive Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, which came in ahead of last week’s No.2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Tomb Raider, The Walking Dead, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Assassin's Creed III and Bioshock Infinite rounded off the top ten.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

Metro: Last Light (Koch Media) Dead Island: Riptide (Koch Media) FIFA 13 (EA) Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (Nintendo) Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision) Tomb Raider (Square Enix) The Walking Dead (Telltale) Injustice: Gods Among Us (Warner) Assassin's Creed 3 (Ubisoft) BioShock Infinite (Take-Two) Exclusive access to the hottest gaming newsKiller guides to make you an even better gamerCool contests and hot prizes

Rift 7950 Crossfire FPS Benchmark

Here we recorded the minimum, average, and maximum frame-rates achieved over a five minute run of Rift.

System specifications consist of:

Intel i7 3770KAsus Maximus V FormulaG. Skill Sniper 16GB DDR3-1866Two Gigabyte Windforce Radeon HD 7950s for crossfireCorsair H100i all-in-one liquid coolerXFX Pro Black Edition 860 watt powerTwo OCZ Vector 128GB SSDs for RAID 0Two Seagate Barracuda 3. 0TB mechanical hard disks1 .0 TB Western Digital Green mechanical hard disk driveNZXT Switch 810 chassis

We achieved a minimum of 43 FPS, a Maximum of 96 FPS, and an average of 72.5 FPS. Rift is very CPU intensive and does require a lot of processor power to get good results. Our testing is done with all in game settings set to their maximum available levels at 1920 X 1080 resolution. The game sure does look gorgeous in our opinion, taking the crown in visual appeal from all of the MMOG’s (massively multiplayer online games) we have played over the years.
