UPDATE: Zynga confirmed the news in press release. Don Mattrick will take over as CEO, and Mark Pincus will continue as Zynga's chairman of the board and chief product officer.
The head of Xbox is leaving Microsoft, according to a report from tech news site AllThingsD. Interactive Entertainment Business president Don Mattrick may leave his position to take over ailing social gaming giant Zynga, according to AllThingsD's anonymous sources.
Mattrick was at the center of the Xbox One's reveal in May. He's been with Microsoft since 2007, after occupying several positions at Electronic Arts, though his popularity with gamers has suffered after some blowback to Xbox One's former policies (we thought of 8 ways it could be worse).
The transfer likely isn't in response to those issues however, as the sources indicated Mattrick has been in talks with Zynga for some time. If he does join the San Francisco-based company, he would take over as CEO from founder Mark Pincus.
We've asked Microsoft for comment about these reports, and will update this article with any response.

O.K. That's step one. But if Microsoft really wants to right things and possibly almost double their pre-sales they need to ditch the mandatory Kinect , add a headset and slap a $399 price tag on it. Let people decide if they want a Kinect or not Mr new Xbox president. Reply Report

Exactly. The mandatory Kinect is the reason my next console is going to be PS4. They haven't even given us a REASON as to why we need the Kinect in the first place. Reply Report

Was about time someone at Microsoft's Xbox department got fired. Either that or he is voluntarily leaving due to factors such as tension at work as everyone around him uses the "I warned you" card XD Reply Report

Well, didn't expect this to happen. I can't say I hated the man, but he has not done Microsoft any favors since the Xbox One reveal in May. I mean, how can you tell people to NOT buy a new console and stick with last gen and expect nothing to come from it.I wonder who MS will get to replace him though? It could be interesting to see how this pans out. Reply Report

Good. I can't think of a worse company for him to go to. Sounds like everyone wins. Reply Report

Hope this hasn't caused him any personal life problems, good luck to him at Zynga. Reply ReportEightboll812 - 6 hours, 30 minutes ago
I believe I called it.People at his level rarely get "fired" publicly. They get golden parachutes, and part of that includes the right to say, "I'm leaving on my own, I didn't get fired."I can see it both ways though. If he is being pushed out for his recent failures, why would Zynga even be contemplating hiring him at this point, if negotiations weren't prior? Yeah, lets hire that guy who just scuttled his entire division, because he has so much experience scuttling businesses, he can help us go down the crapper faster than we already are.... Reply Report

Yep, actually, you did indeed call it, I remember. AND I remember being skeptical, but here we are...Also, wasn't Andy Orth fired publicly? Reply ReportEightboll812 - 5 hours, 23 minutes ago
I read that *Adam* Orth voluntarily resigned, which, like I said above, is how higher ups typically get fired "officially". Also, Adam was openly insulting to people on Twitter, so his hasty departure, while "voluntary" is more correctly interpreted as a firing. I think Mattrick leaving is slightly less obvious a "firing" since the rumor includes a possible new job at Zynga. Reply ReportMr.YumYums - 4 hours, 43 minutes ago

"The transfer LIKELY isn't in response..."Also word highlighted since you apparently missed it the first time, troll. Likely indicates speculation, not certainty. Reply ReportMr.YumYums - 3 hours, 24 minutes ago

Yes. My entire initial comment still stands. Reply Report

So he's leaving one sinking ship for another? Last I heard Zynga wasn't doing too well. Lots of lawsuits for ripping off other games and no one wants to play the crap mobile games they put out. Reply Report

I can't stop laughing. This just makes way too much sense. Reply Report

So he decided he needed to work for a company that can directly say "Fuck you" to gamers rather than passively. Makes sense now... Reply ReportShowing 1-20 of 29 comments
