StreetPass is great in Japan, where population density and 3DS ownership make for frequent exchanges. It's not so great in the Americas and Europe, where players may feel lucky to see their 3DS' little green LED light up weekly rather than monthly or yearly.

Nintendo has a plan to change that. It involves Starbucks and McDonald's.

"Previously the StreetPass feature required multiple Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode to be in the same location at the same time, but in this framework, you can exchange data with others by visiting the same location even at a different time, so we can certainly expect the use rate of the StreetPass feature to grow significantly," Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata explained in a presentation to analysts this week.

3DS systems connect automatically to 28,000 Wi-Fi access points provided by Starbucks, McDonald's, and others in the U.S., and 24,000 points in Europe. A system update planned to drop by autumn will use these points as "relay stations": when your 3DS connects to one, it will check in with a server and log your presence. When someone else connects to the same point later, the server sets up a StreetPass as if you were there at the same time.

It sounds kind of like an Orwellian database of user check-in locations and times, but hey, at least it means more Puzzle Swap tiles, right?

This is kinda neat, but it probably won't help me. Where are these 24,000 EU hotspots, anyway? I've only ever downloaded one thing through SpotPass whilst out and about before and I don't even know where the hell I connected to (I was walking in a marsh for half the day!) And don't get me started on StreetPass. I've had the 3DS over a year and I've only StreetPassed TEN people. I always get home and, nope, no green light this time. Ugh. I'll never get those stupid pink PuzzleSwap panels. ;_; Reply Report

Unfortunately I doubt this would help much in my area, as I'm pretty sure it's 80% retired people living here, (and there's nothing to attract tourists) but it's a neat idea all the same. Oh and I guess it doesn't help I live in Canada ha. (unless they're planning on bringing that over here later?) Reply Report

This is GENIUS! Though I must admit, I like the rarity of StreetPass as it is right now. It makes going to anime conventions that much more rewarding. I hope this "Ghost StreetPass" feature is optional. Reply Report

About time they did something like this. I can walk around the malls of california for six hours and am lucky to get 2 people on streetpass. Reply Report

woah funky length to do it, would've thought they could've edited the code of pictochat or swapnote if not simply port it from the wiiU. oh wait if they gonna make the 3ds home floaty then never mind i can see it taking as long as it has. the current structure is nice tight and organized just coming up with how to remodel in on small screens seems puzzling and maybe they just aren't settling for functional they're probably finding a way to take advantage of or note it being on the 3dsi can see them messing around with it heavily on the visuals since that was the 3ds's initial gimmickds, wii and wiiU are viewed as typos while 3ds is okayed by spell check...?man craving a game that uses the gyro controls now Reply Report

How they didn't think of this in the first place fills me with puzzlement! Sometimes I don't think they have a clue how the world works outside of Japan. Reply Report

scratch that i want more streetpass data for fire emblem and compare teams, bring it on world! i can picture myself roaming town for every station now. only thing i confused about, if we won't be there at the same time doesn't that mean i get some one's data while someone else after me who i never encountered gets mine?funky it wont be a trade but a chain. seems like a great system for a club but maybe not for individual's relationships to shine Reply Report

glad to have more street passes but it'll be a bummer to pinpoint when and where they happened. i think it's fun trying to figure out the moment and think of what i was doing at that point and who was around Reply Report
