PlayStation Plus will be required for much of PlayStation 4's online multiplayer, but several PlayStation Network services will remain free-of-charge. Joystiq attended a few roundtable meetings with Sony Computer Entertainment execs which cleared up the new console's online service plans.
A 12-month subscription will remain $50 in the U.S., SCEA VP of Publisher & Developer Relations Adam Boyes said, and current subscriptions will extend to PS4. The multiplayer restrictions bring PS Plus closer in line with the current implementation of Xbox Live Gold, save for a few important differences: for one, video services (like Netflix) will not require it.
Also, free-to-play multiplayer games can be inside or outside the paywall. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said at another roundtable that "it's the publisher's decision whether they put it inside or outside of PS Plus."

GR, please clarify what I believe is another big difference between XBL and the new Plus. My understanding is:1) Plus only needs to be paid for on one account on a PS4, and that extends the benefits to other accounts on that console2) XBL does not work that way. Any account on a 360/Xbone must have it's own XBL subscription to have online multiplayerIf this is correct, and I think it is, that means a family console or an shared apartment/dormroom console is cheaper by several times for PS4 vs Xbone. If I have 2 kids and a wife, we can all play online. With XBL, we pay x4.Can you please add this clarification (or if this is wrong, put the correct info) to the article above. Reply Report

That's not quite how PS+ works in my experience. I set my daughter up a profile on our PS3 for playing things like Eyepet and Learning With the PooYoos, but obviously didn't make her a PSN account. While it was possible to play games I'd downloaded using my PS+ subscription on her account the was no way to piggyback it to get access to the store or any other online functions. Neither was my wife able to take advantage of the PS+ discounts on the store using her PSN ID, and I assume that multiplayer on PS4 would be tied to your PSN account, rather than the console itself. It could still do with proper clarification, but I don't think your scenario would actually be the case, although I would really love to be proved wrong ;) Reply ReportEightboll812 - 7 hours, 28 minutes ago
It was stated this way in another GR article. We are talking about the new "requirement" of having plus, so how other plus features work may or may not relate to the online multiplayer restriction. But I do believe the example you gave is analogous. You can buy it with your plus account and they can play it. Which would be similar to you buy plus and they play online as well. Reply Report

I would certainly hope this as it would be ridiculous to have to pay for 3 subs so that myself, my wife and my step-son could use a large part of the machines functionality. I think it would also be in Sony's best interest, if they want to keep maintaining the huge amount of consumer goodwill they've gained for themselves recently. Until there's official clarification I'll remain skeptical though, at the end of the day the prime motivation of any large corporation like Sony is making money for themselves and their shareholders (which a worrying amount of people don't seem to be able to grasp), so whenever they appear to be giving with their left hand I always start wondering what they'll try to take with their right, although maybe I'm just getting too cynical in my old age..... "I would certainly hope this is the case" - you'd think as someone who used to do proof reading as part of their job I'd have better standards for myself!!! ;) Reply Report

So long as I never see adds put on the XMB (or whatever PS4 uses) and the Game Collection stays awesome I have no problem with this. Reply Report

So how do you define F2P games? Freemium titles with microtransactions? Reply Report
archnite - 11 hours, 17 minutes ago
Basically yeah, that's what F2P games are. Reply Report

So...it's JUST for online multiplayer, right? So...does that mean you can still access your friends list, trophy list, the store, and all the other online features, like the new videos & sharing stuff? It's just, that would seem pretty weird, actually, that you can do everything BAR multiplayer. Not that anyone's complaining...so long as Netflix still works, that's all I needed to know. Although I imagine Sony will come up with somekind of Plus subscription discount deal shortly before the PS4 launches to get more people notified and on the bandwagon...I would buy into it. Actually I might just do it now. Hmm. Reply ReportShowing 1-12 of 12 comments
