PS3 firmware update now safe to download

Sony has released a new firmware update for PS3. This follows a number of complaints that the previous version was bricking some consoles by totally removing the XMB. Obviously, you can't navigate through PS3's functions without the XMB... Whoops.

If you're one of the unlucky few who downloaded version 4.45 and lost your XMB, you can update your PS3 by downloading 4.46 to a memory stick, rebooting your PS3 in Safe Mode, and installing the new firmware from there. Here are the instructions on using Safe Mode via the official PlayStation website.

What is actually in the system update? Not much. General improvements to make your PS3 run more smoothly, and the option to turn off Trophy notifications.

Fix for soft-bricking PS3 firmware coming June 27

Sony will release a non-lethal version of its PlayStation 3 4.45 firmware update on June 27. The since-pulled patch rendered "a small number of users" unable to access their PS3's interface after patching--in other words it soft-bricked their systems.

A community manager said Sony has isolated the issue in a post on PlayStation's official U.S. forums, and a new system software update which resolves the issue will release on June 27.

Of course, users who had problems with the first patch and were left sans interface can't install the update through typical means. The community manager said Sony will provide instructions to implement a solution alongside the new firmware update.

Update: Sony has pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles. In a statement, Sony said that it’ll inform users once the problems have been rectified and the update is made available again.

Original story:Don't update your PlayStation 3 to 4.45! Dozens of users on PlayStation's official U.S. forums are reporting that the latest patch, which went live earlier today, is leaving their consoles stuck without an XMB interface.

The firmware update is intended to improve system stability and add options for in-game trophy notifications. It may well do that, but the folks who are stuck looking at the system's sparkly wave pattern without anything to interact with aren't deriving much benefit.

Restarting the system and other recovery attempts do not appear to resolve the issue. If you haven't downloaded the update yet, avoid it until Sony gives the all-clear. If you have downloaded it and can't access the XMB, sit tight until we know more.

We've reached out to Sony for comment on the issue and will update with any response.

I haven't been affected, but nevertheless, don't freak out people.They've pulled out the patch meaning 4.41 is the 'latest'. You can download this patch from the PlayStation website at the Support section, save it on a pen drive, plug it onto the PS3 and start it up in safe mode, then select the option to Install from USB.For those who don't know how to start a PS3 in safe mode, all you've gotta do is hold the power button until you hear the third beep and the console's LED goes red (you'll hear a beep every 5 seconds you mantain the power button pressed - first one means system is on, second means the video has been reset and the *third means it's off), then push and hold it once again until the *third beep comes, which will do a double beep this time, let go of the button and the screen will display a message telling you to plug a controller and hit the PS button to continue. Oh dear...Welp, glad I didn't use my PS3 today and thus was spared from downloading this, sounds like I might not have had a problem, but who knows.Anyway, this sucks majorly, and here's hoping Sony doesn't only fix the patch, but that they can restore the damage done. Otherwise, this is yet another blemish on their part regarding their infrastructure that won't at all inspire confidence in those on the fence of getting a PS4 or not. SPECIALLY if you're going to start charging for online play, Sony better get their shit together and ensure botch-ups like this won't happen then, or whatever advantage the E3 conference gave them is going to be really hindered by this.You were doing so well Sony... True that. On the other hand Microsoft receives membership fees since the very beginning - allowing them to successfully support the stability of their online infrastructure. Sony did not charge players for years, I give them huge credit for that. Letting players subscribe for online play was a wise decision, taken into account that PS+ offers so much more value than Live Gold.Let's hope they fix it asap and keep the damage as low as possible. Small nitpick...this has nothing to do with the quality of their online network. It has to do with software QA testing. The image itself is messed up, which means it should never have passed QA to ever get posted for download. Software images typically have things like CRC check to verify the integrity of the image after you download it, so your PS3 knows if anything got corrupted during download before it attempts to load and re-write any files on your drive. Mine too works fine. I have been downloading tons of stuff after changing my 80gb to 160gb 7200rpm drive. I think its a WD-Blue from 2007. I first tried a update earlier on the 18th but didn't get anything. Later that day I went to amazon video downloaded and installed some extra stuff when it said it needed a update. I said ok and the Amazon video app froze to where it wouldn't exit on its own with a grey back ground. I held PS button and it allowed me to Quit then. It might have froze and I might have hard powered with PS power switch on back of console. I downloaded installed the update it restarted but the controller was beeping a bunch but unplugging the charge cable and turning console off and back on was still working. Reply Report

Sony pulls PS3 firmware in light of system errors

Sony has pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles. In a statement, Sony said that it’ll inform users once the problems have been rectified and the update is made available again.

A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson said: "We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience."

According to multiple users, downloading PS3 firmware update 4.45 left their consoles stuck without an XMB interface. Restarting the system and other recovery attempts have so far failed to resolve the problem. The firmware update was designed to improve system stability and add options for in-game trophy notifications.
