Official battery extends Wii U GamePad life to 5-8 hours

The Wii U GamePad is the centerpiece of Nintendo's touch-enabled console, but only as long as its battery holds out. Soon Japanese owners will be able to extend the GamePad's shortlived three-to-five hour battery with an official battery pack (via Ars Technica).

The optional pack provides five to eight hours of life away from the charging cradle, Nintendo claims. It fits in flush with the pad, so there's no extra bulk, but we wouldn't be surprised if it adds some mass to the surprisingly light GamePad.

The pack retails for 3,000 yen, or about $30 or £20, and will start shipping on July 25. We asked Nintendo of America if it has any plans to bring the juiced up batteries and some of the other new accessories (like an official Wii Remote charging dock, finally) overseas, but it had nothing to announce.

New Rain trailer reveals autumn 2013 release

Sony has released a new trailer for Rain, the atmospheric stealth-oriented PS3 adventure from PlayStation C.A.M.P!, the team behind titles including Tokyo Jungle and Echochrome. The game tells the story of a boy attempting to track and rescue a girl being hunted by ghostly creatures in the mysterious “world of rain”. Both characters take the form of silhouettes only visible in the rain, and players interact with the environment, solve puzzles and use the rain to guide and protect them.

The new trailer and fresh screenshots posted above showcase a number of locations, from a church to a brightly lit circus and an abandoned factory. “It is here that the boy discovers that when he walks through mud he can be seen by any enemy and only by walking through a deep rain puddle to wash off the mud will he be able to hide once again,” says associate producer Dais Kawaguchi.

Sony plans to share more about Rain at E3 next month, when it will let attendees go hands-on with the game. Following a look at the title in March, we wrote in this Rain preview: “Rain conveys its theme of uncertainty in a convincing fashion, even with just a few minutes of seeing the game. We're already intrigued by the lonely, depressing world, and its invisible characters.”

Limbo hits Vita next week

The Vita version of award-winning puzzle-platformer Limbo will launch next week, Playdead CEO and co-founder Dino Patti has confirmed. The game will go live on PSN for Sony's portable system on Tuesday, June 5 in the US, priced at $14.99. It'll release the following day in Europe, where it will cost €12.99/£9.99.

Patti said in a post on the PS Blog: "As we approach the third anniversary of Limbo, the game is finally ready for handheld devices. Together, with the talented people at [LittleBigPlanet Vita co-developer] Double Eleven, we at Playdead have been working hard to adapt Limbo to PS Vita without compromising the experience." Patti said in March that the game won't support touchscreen controls as the studio wanted to give mobile players “exactly the same experience” as console ones.

Limbo puts players in the role of a young boy travelling through a hostile 2D black and white world, where he must overcome a series of physics-based puzzles and obstacles in an attempt to discover the fate of his sister. The game first released on Xbox 360 in July 2010, before making its way to PS3, PC and Mac the following year. In our original Limbo review, we called the title “a genuine masterpiece you NEED to experience”. Last year, we even suggested it’s one of the greatest games ever made.

Earlier this week, the official selection list for this year’s E3 IndieCade showcase revealed that Sony plans to release another indie darling, thatgamecompany’s Flower, on Vita.

Flower looks set for Vita release

Flower is to be released on Vita, according to a list of titles set to be shown at this year’s E3 IndieCade showcase, Joystiq reports. First released on PSN for PS3 in 2009, thatgamecompany’s Flower was the second title in a three-game partnership the studio had with Sony. The first was 2007’s Flow and the third was last year’s Journey.

Sony has yet to respond to our request for comment regarding Flower’s release on Vita, but IndieCade’s description of the portable version reads: “Playing as the wind, the player guides and grows a swarm of petals by interacting with other flowers and the surrounding environment. The goals and journey in each level vary, but all involve flight, exploration and interaction with the level. Using simple touch or motion controls, the player guides the lead petal and accumulates a swarm of flower petals as he moves at his own pace within the environment, causing the on-screen world to change.”

We said in our Flower review: “Flower is likely to inspire the sort of purple prose that always appears whenever games skirt the periphery of ‘art’; but to bury the game under a load of pretentious hyperbole is to do it a disservice… This is a beautiful, immediately enjoyable experience in its own right and you shouldn’t let the seeming pretension of the concept put you off… It may barely qualify as a game in the traditional sense but Flower’s evocative world deserves to be experienced by all.”

Speaking last week as Sony confirmed a June 18 US release date for the Vita version of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said the company is “continually searching for the best games - whether brand new titles or ones existing already on PS3 - to bring to PS Vita gamers everywhere”.

Earlier this month, the platform holder also announced that SCE Japan Studio is developing a new Vita exclusive action game called Freedom Wars. And yesterday the company confirmed that it has made the inclusion of Vita Remote Play a necessary requirement for all PS4 games barring those that support specific hardware like PS4 Eye.

The Last of Us DLC and season pass detailed

Naughty Dog will release three The Last of Us DLC packs (one single-player and two multiplayer), which are available to pre-purchase at a discounted rate when bought as part of a newly announced season pass. Priced at $19.99 / €19.99, which represents a 30 per cent saving over purchasing the DLC packs individually, the season pass is now available digitally in the US and will launch later today in Europe when the PlayStation Store updates. It will also be released at retail when the game arrives next month.

Eric Monacelli, community strategist at Naughty Dog, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog: “For the first time ever we’ll be offering single player DLC. The journey and cast of characters in The Last of Us lends itself to thorough narrative exploration and we’ve got more of the story to tell.

“The two other DLC packs will feature multiplayer content in the form of additional multiplayer maps and other expansions. You’ll be hearing about our multiplayer over the next couple of days. It’s an experience that continues the themes, tone and tension from the single player campaign and we can’t wait to tell you more about it.”

Monacelli also detailed a number of exclusive bonuses for season pass buyers designed to offer players a head start in the single player campaign

Increased Crafting Speed Increased Healing Speed 9mm Reload Speed Upgrade Rifle Clip Capacity Upgrade Grounded – exclusive 90min “Making of The Last of Us” documentary

The Last of Us is also now available as a digital pre-order from the US PS Store and will be in Europe later today. The game will be a day one digital download featuring an installer that lets users begin playing once the data is a little over halfway downloaded.

The survival-horror title went gold earlier this month ahead of the Last of Us release date of June 14. A The Last of Us demo included with copies of God of War: Ascension will go live this Friday, May 31, offering early access to one chapter of the game. We got our first hands-on with the title in February - see how we fared in multiple encounters with the infected in this The Last of Us preview.

Xbox One won't let developers self-publish games to its online marketplace, defying the trend followed by Nintendo and Sony, but that doesn't mean Microsoft is forsaking independent studios.

Don Mattrick, Microsoft's president of Interactive Entertainment, told Kotaku that Microsoft will pursue other angles to make Xbox One an attractive platform for indies.

"We're going to have an independent creator program," Mattrick said. "We're going to sponsor it. We're going to give people tools. We're going to give more information."

Mattrick got into the business as an independent developer whose studio was acquired by Electronic Arts in 1991. He said that experience, and the success of games like Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade, mean he has no plans to ignore smaller developers.

But as per usual, we'll have to wait for more details on the exact nature of the creator program, and answers to questions like how it will be curated and presented.

"That is something we think--I think--is important," Mattrick said. "That's how I started in the industry. There's no way we're going to build a box that doesn't support that."

Someone might want to point out to Mattrick that Minecraft was already successful before being ported to Xbox. His statement implies that Minecraft was a shining example of XBox supporting Indies and helping them succeed. It was rather the reverse. People were begging to have Minecraft on consoles. It's not only blatantly arrogant, it's revisionist history. He's also trying to garner gamer cred. Hey, look at me, I was a developer before I became Locutus.... Reply Report

This is so Microsoft. Instead of giving indie devs the most flexible option that they prefer, Microsoft has to force their own way of doing indie development on them. This is undoubtedly a way for Microsoft to get a bigger piece of the indie pie, rather than giving them the freedom to grow the pie for themselves and reap their hard-earned profits. I'm not surprised, given how MS has treated indies in the past. Reply Report

Yet another wishy-washy statement that doesn't actually clear anything up. Good Lord Microsoft, it's as if you are actively BEGGING people to get mad at you and mock you...Of course, this is not nearly as bad as the lovely quotes Phil Spencer dished out today:http://www.destructoid.com/ms-says-gamers-will-buy-everything-including-xbox-one-254678.phtmlNot at all surprised that GR didn't made an article out of that, but it still worth pointing out that the amount of hubris MS is exhibiting regarding the Xbone is staggering. BladedFalcon thank you very much for putting that link on here. I cannot believe the people at Microsoft would be so blatantly cocky that they would go on to say that any one who is a gamer is going to buy our console so we don't need to say any thing because at the end of the day your still going to buy our console and pick us over the ps4 (you probably think this is a me exaggerating but go read the link). That is the most blatantly arrogant thing i have ever read form a game company ever. Screw you Microsoft i'm a gamer through and through and i wouldn't choose xboxone over the ps4 even if the xboxone was free Reply Report

That article references this one with expanded quotes: http://www.oxm.co.uk/54833/xbox-one-if-all-you-want-is-gaming-youll-still-pick-us/Not that the expanded quotes actually help their plight or anything, but a couple thoughts come to mind. 1) The subtitle "'super core guys' who supposedly despise live TV"... Small nit on whoever wrote the article, but EVERYONE despises live TV. Live TV has one place....sports. Beyond that, I can't recall technically watching Live TV (without pausing and jumping back and forth) in several years. 2) That is actually the irony, because XBone only offers Live TV experiences in terms of TV experiences. If you like switching back and forth to a live feed you have no control of, awesome. I recall the TiVo tagline: "TiVo lets you pause live TV."MS: "XBone lets you tell your TiVo to pause live TV." Following one article linked to another, found this gem. I hadn't heard this "cloud computing" claim among all the noise. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-in-theory-can-xbox-one-cloud-transform-gamingHere are some quotes from MS trying to tapdance around technical folks asking them how they might use cloud computing to solve real gaming problems:'So what other options are there for cloud computing? In this regard, perhaps it's a bit disconcerting that Microsoft seems stuck for ideas. In the Xbox One architecture panel, Boyd Multerer, director of development, had this to say: "You can start to have bigger worlds. You can start to have lots of players together, but you can also maybe take some of the things that are normally done locally, push them out, and... you know, this generation is about embracing change and growth while still maintaining the predictability the game developer needs."Marc Whitten, chief product officer, said in a post-event interview: "We can take advantage of that cloud power to create experiences and really pair with the power of the box. So game creators can use raw cloud computation to create bigger multiplayer matches or bigger worlds, more physics, all those things. I think you're going to see unparalleled creativity when you match that power of the new Xbox Live with the power of the new Xbox." 'If I hear another marketing exec or VP of pencil pushing at MS talk about creating experiences, I'm gonna scream. Seriously. It's like they did some market research, found that gamers like "new experiences" and decided that needed to be in every sentence that answered a question. New experiences such as Live TV, switching between Live TV and Netflix. Switching between Netflix and gamez. Oh and my favorite new experience of all...Internet Explorer. I don't even know anyone using that anymore. Reply Report

Blizzard reportedly resets Titan MMO

Blizzard has confirmed a restructuring of the development team behind its unannounced MMO in light of significant design and technology changes made to the project, amid reports that the game has been completely reset and won’t release until 2016 at the earliest.

A VentureBeat source said to be familiar with the matter claimed that a team of 100 developers working on the MMO was cut to 30 members charged with starting over, while the other 70 staff were reassigned to other work.

A Blizzard spokesman said in a statement: “We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We’ve come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.”

Blizzard has never named or put a target release date on the game, but it has spoken openly about it as its “next-gen MMO project”, while a supposedly leaked release schedule suggested in 2010 that the game was being lined up to launch either late this year or in early 2014.

In March 2011, Blizzard chief operating officer Paul Sams told VentureBeat that the studio had “taken some of our most experienced developers and put them on [Titan]”, adding: “We believe we have a dream team. These are the people who made World of Warcraft a success. We are going to blow people’s minds.” In July of the same year, a report on Activision Blizzard's stock prospects from analyst firm Stern Agee claimed that Titan was set to target a “casual” audience.

Curiosity winner will help shape Godus, receive some profits

The world's Curiosity was sated over the weekend. The mysterious cube-tapping app from Peter Molyneux's 22cans studio concluded with, as promised, just one person entitled to the "life-changing" secret contained within the multilayered box.

That person was 18-year-old Edinburgh, Scotland resident Bryan Henderson. He'd just downloaded Curiosity an hour before winning, he told Wired.

Now he'll have some kind of significant impact on the morals and lives of players of Godus, Molyneux revealed in the video Henderson received (the benevolent teen god agreed to share it with the rest of the internet). He'll also receive a small cut of Godus' profits.

What would've been inside the cube if Godus' Kickstarter failed? Maybe a video of Molyneux crying, or asking for money? The world will never know.

UK Chart: Resident Evil Revelations enters at No.1

The HD remake of Resident Evil Revelations claimed the top spot on the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended May 25. Price promotions helped FIFA 13 jump one place to No.2, ahead of last week's top seller, Metro Last Light. Dead Island: Riptide dropped two spots to No.4, while 3DS exclusive Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D was the second-highest new entry at No.5. The third and final new release to make the top 40 was movie tie-in Fast & Furious: Showdown at No.14.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

Resident Evil: Revelations (Capcom) FIFA 13 (EA) Metro: Last Light (Deep Silver) Dead Island: Riptide (Deep Silver) Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (Nintendo) Assassin's Creed 3 (Ubisoft) Tomb Raider (Square Enix) Far Cry 3 (Ubisoft) Luigi's Mansion 2 (Nintendo) Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins (Nintendo)

We said in our Resident Evil Revelations review: “Though the asking price is a tad high, Resident Evil: Revelations is a worthy investment for those who miss the survival horror games of old or appreciate spine-chilling enemy design.”

The Humble Indie Bundle 8 has a positively immodest selection of titles for your pay-what-you-like perusal. Seven games, including multiple critical darlings, compose the latest package deal.

That's Little Inferno, Awesomenauts, Thomas Was Alone, Dear Esther, and Capsized for any price, and Hotline Miami and Proteus for purchases above the average (currently $5.53). Each game is available on PC, Mac, and Linux, including Steam codes, and each has a soundtrack download except for Hotline Miami.

As is Humble Bundle custom, the amount paid can be split between the developers, charities, and the Humble Store.

Rayman Legends coming to Vita

Ubisoft has announced that Rayman Legends will be released on Vita later this year alongside the previously confirmed console versions. The Vita edition will include five exclusive maps, playable with green bottle fly Murphy and controlled through the system’s rear touchpad. Local and online multiplayer will be supported, as will the title’s online challenge mode. Buyers will also receive two exclusive character costumes: a Prince of Persia outfit for Rayman and a Sam Fisher one for Globox.

Rayman Legends was originally due for release as a Wii U exclusive in February 2013, but was delayed to allow for a multiplatform launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 too. Developer Ubisoft Montpellier has said that the extra development time afforded by the game’s delay will allow the studio to add new characters, bosses and levels to the final product. Last month, Ubisoft brought forward the Rayman Legends release date from September to August 29 in Europe and August 30 in the UK. The game will launch in the US on September 3.

Sonic Lost Worlds debut trailer goes fast

The hyperspeed needlemouse is back in form in the IGN debut trailer for Sonic Lost Worlds. The Sega/Nintendo collaboration looks like a fast, frenzied version of Super Mario Galaxy. We're not complaining.

No ancient ruins, pistol-packing hedgehogs, or insufferable emerald-collecting Knuckles levels here. Just a couple of colorful punks threatening cute woodland creatures and a blue blur streaking by to defeat them.

We'll see if Sonic Lost Worlds can restore the classic franchise when it debuts exclusively on Wii U and 3DS in 2013.
