If Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is successful, a spruced-up version of Final Fantasy XII may be the next step. Yoshinori Kitase, who produced both the original games and their remakes, spoke to RPG Site about the future of Final Fantasy's past.
"If they do well, I think this will pave the way for more of the previous games to remade in an HD sort of quality," Kitase said. "I mean, if we had to single out one of the vast number of Final Fantasy titles which we could make in HD, it would have to be Final Fantasy XII."
Series fans may grumble that Final Fantasy VII wasn't mentioned as a candidate. But converting the PlayStation original to modern standards of graphics and control would be more like making a new game than retexturing and smoothing out another PlayStation 2 title.
Kitase pointed out that he was not involved with FFXII, so he doesn't want to say too much. But good sales figures for FFX/X-2 HD Remaster certainly wouldn't hurt its chances.
"We'll have to wait and see if these Remasters are going to be successful, first," he said.

I would die a happy man if Square did a HD remaster of FFXII. Its one of my favourite RPG's ever, and its right up there with FFVI and VII as one of my Top 3 FF's. On the subject of remakes, I wouldnt mind an FFVI remake on the 3DS! The 16-bit original will always be king, but I'd like to see it in modern 3D. Reply Reportdcbernman - 11 hours, 25 minutes ago

Meh, I'm not falling for that after I bought Beyond G&E HD and still haven't heard anything about the sequel. I know this is a different publisher but Squeenix is a little too similar to Ubi for my liking. Reply Report

So in order to get a remake of XII, I have to buy X-HD? Alright, count me in. Reply Report

An FF6 remake with super HD sprites would really be nice. Also a Snatcher remake. Reply Report

FF12 remake would be awesome and I would buy it. Though I do not care for FF7, Square is dumb not to remake it. So many people want it, the game would sell millions. Just give people what they want and they will buy it. Reply Report

Even if the game were to sell millions they wouldn't make back all it would cost to turn FF7 into a HD game Reply Report

They've outright stated that unless and until another FF game surpasses VII in terms of quality and sales figures, they won't remake VII. So basically, if you want a remake of VII, buy other FF games. Reply ReportCUFCfan616 - 15 hours, 37 minutes ago
haven't they basically been remaking the first few FFs for mobiles? I know if FFVII was to be remade then fans would expect it to be to a PS3/4 level of quality, but if they're taking the time to turn the original games from 2d to 3d then it's not too unreasonable to think about the PSone games being remade for the next gen. They know that this is what a lot of people want and that it would sell and you would think that from a company struggling financially that they would listen to what their consumers want and try to deliver. As it is, the PS2 games were good, but probably not good enough for me to buy HD copies when I have the originals still working in my PS2. Of course that's the problem. If the PS2 HD remakes don't sell well then they'll try and use that to justify not doing the PSone games and we'll be stuck with whatever emo teenager drama that they package as Final Fantasy in the future Reply Report

That might be killer!! Totally want to see that coming! never really had the opportunity to finish the game as I was stuck in graduation that time. It already looked splendid on Playstation 2, a HD remaster plus trophy support...I am sold! Reply Report

I'd be down with this. I enjoyed XII quite a lot and since my ps2 recently died (R.I.P) i'd be happy to pick it up on PS3. Reply ReportShowing 1-17 of 17 comments
