Xbox One doesn't include a packed-in headset accessory, Microsoft has confirmed. The tech titan told Ars Technica that the next-gen consoles' official monaural headset, which plugs into an Xbox One controller much like its 360 predecessor, is sold separately.
For comparison's sake, PS4 comes bundled with a monaural earbud and in-line microphone. On the other hand, it doesn't come with the Kinect equivalent PlayStation Eye (sold separately for $60), while Xbox One packs in its camera-and-microphone device. Microsoft has stressed Kinect's ability to isolate voices from background noise and positioned it as a all-in-one solution for video and audio chatting.
If you'd prefer your whole living room doesn't hear the mind-boggling awfulness of Xbox Live voice chat, however, you're welcome to buy your own basic headset or (likely pricier) officially sanctioned third-party model.
The official Xbox 360 headset costs $20 if it doesn't come in your preferred bundle, so we'd expect its successor to retail around there.

Does it use the same plug as the 360 one? Because if so it would make sense to not bundle it together because more than 50% of the buyers will already have the 360 one. Reply ReportLoboMau - 11 hours, 22 minutes ago

Meh, doesn't bother me much. MS hasn't included a headset in the box with a new console for a while now. I also don't talk much during online games anyway. Reply Report

It begs the crap out of me that both Sony and Microsoft are taking a step backwards when it comes to headsets. This is 2013, and you mean to tell me that people are suppose to fit that cramped little Xbox one headset around their heads? For the big headed people in the world, that hurts/ leaves an imprint when left on for extended periods. Reply Report

I don't get what's the problem. It really seems that people complain about everything even about peripherals that have been rendered near useless.Kinect has a built in microphone. As for the speakers, one can always connect the headphones directly to the tv ,or indirectly via adapter. There you go problem solved . The other way is to mute those who are making noise (something one already does even with a headset). Reply Report

Glad I'm going the PS4 route this time. The ridiculous amount of douchebags playing music or having movies on during lobby/games was ridiculous. Now that Kinect is mandatory I imagine this problem to be ten fold worse. MS can talk all they want about Kinect isolating noises. I don't buy it. I have been on the other end of a chat with a person using the first connect and it was bad. MS fed us so much bullshit about the first one I'm not willing to give them another chance. Reply Report

In a MGO lobby on PS3, idiots kept on playing Michael Jackson songs. Thank god, it allowed to individually mute certain people. Reply Report

Hm, well that's a shame. Also, honestly? I'd rather get the headset with the system than the Kinect or the Playstation camera, even if that's more expensive. If nothing else, I know I'll want to use the headset at least once in a while. Reply Report

He has a point though. Any gamer will use a handset more than Kinect or Playstation Camera. It is more valuable than any camera to me. Reply Report

But you are not realizing that almost every person on a console/PC will use a headset. The same cannot be said for the Kinect, for example, or the Playstation eye. Forcing the Kinect/eye on people will only force it to collect dust. Monetary value in this case simply does not matter. Give me a $20 headset for free and ill use it every time I boot up that system. Give me a $100 camera (or whatever it really cost) and I will use it less. Reply ReportShowing 1-20 of 28 comments
