You'll need a PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer on PS4. Sony revealed the change at its E3 press conference today as somewhat of a footnote between used game support and lack of online requirements.

Current PS Plus memberships will carry over from PS3 and Vita to PS4, Sony said, and it didn't mention any new pricing models. A one-year membership costs $50 at the moment.

Sony plans to continue offering free games, discounts, and other bonuses on top of PS Plus, but it looks the valuable option just became a bit less optional.

Still sucks, but PSN is a way, WAY better deal than XBL. After my girly friend got her PS3 this past Christmas, I was shocked at how many deals, discounts, and free games she got for a cheaper subscription price. This is okay in my book, seeing as how the PS4 is cheaper, more powerful, and has more interesting games (IMO). Reply Report

I never really used PS+ before. I always used the PSN, or Xbox Live for multiplayer. Being that now PS+ is the only way to play multiplayer I don't think it would be a bad transition. We still have a few more months to go before November so we will see. Reply Report

Don't care much for online gaming so no problemo. Reply Report

Why is everybody defending this? I was starting to worry sony's E3 was too good, now before you say "it's just a small $50 yearly fee don't get your knickers in a knot." Firstly as an Australian it is $70 for me but that's besides the point the reason why I never got PS+ was because as an avid fan I'd already bought the games I wanted that they were offering in the instant game collections. When I most likely get a ps4 and if I decide to purchase PS+ it is discouraging me to actually buy the games I want because I'll just keep waiting until they're on sale or free. Another reason this is utterly stupid is you need a credit card just to purchase PS+ and you know who don't have credit cards? A sizeable chunk of your target demographic, kids and teenagers. Finally, as PC gaming is becoming more and more popular it just seems like they're digging themselves deeper by making PC gaming just that more attractive for the common folk. I wouldn't have a problem if they gave non PS+ members a limited weekly allowance for online play, like 3 hours a week before you have to start paying. Reply Report

you don't necessarily need a credit card. You can buy memberships and PSN cash at gamestop and CVS, etc. Reply Report

Just read somewhere else that as long as there is one PS+ subscription on a PS4, any account on the system can play online. Can anyone confirm? Reply Report

mbavalo - 2 hours, 16 minutes ago

True, I remember that being mentioned during the press conference.. that is unless they change their minds Reply Report

Kermit1970 - 16 minutes ago

Yes I can confirm that. Think of it as 1 PS+ account per PS4 and any account on that PS4 can game online. Reply Report

It's a bit sneaky of them to fit it between the awesome announcements but I can understand them wanting to make it more profitable for them. Besides, I already gladly subscribe to PS+ so it doesn't make much difference to me Reply Report

I don't play online multiplayer enough to care too much either way about this, but what I will say is that I recently accidentally took out a 3 month PS+ subscription after I forgot to take off auto-renew from a free trial. I was a bit pissed off at first because I am pretty tight with cash, but I can honestly say that in the end I got way more than my moneys worth the Instant Game Collection. Reply Report

"moneys worth FROM the Instant Game Collection", apparently I can't type this morning.... Reply Report

I'm okay with this. It's cheaper than Xbox Live and you get much more for your money. Free would've been nice, but this is still fine. Reply Report

I was kind of wondering how much longer Sony could afford to run free multiplayer servers. Though, considering what you get with PS+ that Xbox Gold doesn't offer, it definitely seems worth it. I'll just have to evaluate when I want to make the multiplayer switch to the PS4 because I'm not paying for both Gold and PS+. Reply Report

Everyone's talking about how Plus is more like Xbox Live policy now. But notice Tretton said that you DID NOT need a plus membership to use social and media apps (I'm assuming this means like netflix and youtube). That is something you DO need a Gold membership for, which is ridiculous. Can someone confirm this? This would inevitably continue Sony's dominance of video streaming usage. Reply Report

In a way, Sony played this very well. Many of us were holding our breath on whether Sony had a similar DRM scheme, and the fact that they weren't really saying much made me believe they were letting MS take the brunt of abuse for speaking first. And in the wake of the relief they aren't, I'm almost happy that its only "paying for SCEA" that has gone up in price. It's like going to a store, expecting something to be way overpriced and then finding out it's only a little bit overpriced. You are almost glad to be paying less than you thought.I'm waiting on the replay to see the conference, but I'm curious if I'm reading this correctly, that online non-multiplayer is still free, meaning can you chat and use other SCEA features without having plus? That would be nice for those who are primarily single player gamers. Reply Report

CitizenWolfie - 5 hours, 30 minutes ago

Yeah, I'm sure I'm not alone in assuming Sony would stay quiet about it in the conference only to meekly admit they were following suit later. But for them to end with a big "fuck you" to MS was the biggest surprise for me. Reply Report

Xbox live is becoming more like PlayStation plus and PlayStation plus is becoming more like Xbox live. Weird how these things work. First Microsoft gives free games to live members and now Sony does this. Reply Report
