UPDATE: Naughty Dog and the designer have come to a mutual agreement, according to an update on his blog.

"I’ve just spoken with Naughty Dog over the phone in a very constructive conversation. Can’t say more at the moment, but it seems as if matters will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction shortly. I can say that they do acknowledge their error in using my map and were very apologetic for it. I likewise apologized for my initial vitriolic post. A lot of mutual respect for each other’s creative work."

The original story follows below.

Naughty Dog is known for its attention to detail. So when one fan noticed an accurate map of the Massachusetts Bay public transit system in The Last of Us and tweeted a picture, it seemed innocuous. But according to the map's creator, Naughty Dog's attention to detail was lacking in one important area: his permission.

"For a software developer--especially a big developer working on a blockbuster title like this--to casually appropriate someone else’s work and incorporate it into their game without any discussion with the owner of that work is completely unacceptable," designer Cameron Booth wrote on his blog.

Note that Booth's map differs from the official Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority map--it's meant to present the same information in a streamlined, easier-to-read format. Booth actually refrained from submitting the map to an official MBTA contest because he would have lost all rights to it. Looks like he already lost those rights in The Last of Us' virtual world, unfortunately.

This isn't the first unlicensed likeness dispute to mar Naughty Dogs' latest title, though Ellen Page's resemblance to main character Ellie is much more open to interpretation.

Booth has since tweeted that he had a "very constructive phone conversation" with Naughty Dog and the issue will soon be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. We asked the Sony-owned developer about his concerns and will update this story with any response.

There's this and the issue with Ellen Page apparently not liking that Ellie looks exactly like her, lets hope both gets resolved, we don't need problems on a fantastic game Reply Report

BladedFalcon - 15 hours, 29 minutes ago

The Ellen Page is a Non-issue. She just made the comment but she's not doing anything about it. And heck, working with Sony on Beyond: Two Souls, they WON'T let her do anything and by now she probably has been scolded. The last thing Sony wants is to be infighting or bad blood between studios.'Sides, Ellie really doesn't don't look EXACTLY like Ellen Page, she might be an obvious inspiration, but in any legal court of law, Page wouldn't have any case whatsoever. So again, it's a non-issue. Reply Report

Bloodstorm - 13 hours, 39 minutes ago

Agreed. When I saw Ellie, sure, I thought she looked like Ellen Page too, but there is absolutely nothing anyone could do about it. She looks as much like Ellen Page as she doesn't, and has never been billed as being Ellen Page, so it's not like they stole her likeness. Reply Report

shawksta - 12 hours, 15 minutes ago

Frankly its too retarded to seem an issue, she's already leading Beyond 2 souls and voices Ellie, I really don't see a problem but hey personal preference Reply Report

...She doesn't voice Ellie >_> Reply Report

Redeater - 6 hours, 8 minutes ago

I don't think the Ellen Page is an issue. Ashley Johnson provided the perfect amount of sarcasm, vulnerability and sympathy.Take Ellie's last scene in the game, insert Ellen Page's blank cynical stare and imagine the same heartbreaking dialogue delivered in her the same way she has voiced every character ever.....from Trailer Park Boys......to Hard Candy.....to Juno....While we are at it, let's put Nic Cage as Joel."NOT THE SPORES!!!!" This is really stupid, the map creator should go shove it, hell he should be fucking happy, it's not like anyone in or out of Mass. really gave a fuck that he was the map's creator, or who he even is. It's like someone being proud because they wrote that little manual that comes with your toaster, that manual that you leave in the box and recycle, and then the manual showed up in a game and he just had to bitch about it. austinfloyd85 - 15 hours, 34 minutes ago

He probably put a lot of time into that, and a lot of thought into making it streamlined. And then it gets used without his permission and he doesn't get paid for it? Of course he would be mad. I would be pissed. Try to design something that's pleasing to the eye, easily readable, and informative and then tell me he was just bitching about it. You know nothing about the work that goes into that kind of stuff, so you should be the one to shove it. You're an idiot with no sense of what kind of work goes into these kind of things. If I had made the map I would be proud to see it incorporated in a game, same with my music. If I happened to play the next installment of Zombies and hear a song I made as the musical easter egg; I would fangirl like no one has ever fangirled before. But I do see where he is coming from. I'm sure the people that make milk cartons are caught up in their work too, but this guy has no right to be pissed off, first it's unlikely he worked alone on the map for the mass. transit system, second, people use other media such as picture, maps, documents, without permission in games, and media. I'm sure that Picasso turns over in his grave every time a painting of his is used without the permission of whichever museum is in possession of it. The point is that this guy is nothing more than one of the assholes here that troll for attention, he saw a drawing he made last year used in a popular video game and wanted to take credit, it was obvious he wasn't interested in suing or getting compensation, or even real recognition, as his name is no more public than it really was before, sure now he will be remembered as "that guy who made a fuss over a map" and maybe that's all he wanted and now he is happy and can go back to making the 2014 mass. public transit map. Oh boy... That's.. uncofmortable.Specially because well, Naughty Dog didn't really NEED to do that, or even do any accurate representation of the map or the city, pretty sure almost no one (except perhaps the most anal, nasal nitpicking jerks, and those should be ignored anyways.) would have cared because, well, it's a very non-vital part of the game. The Order: 1886 details from Ready At Dawn

The Order: 1886 briefly grabbed the spotlight at Sony's E3 press conference as a stylish steampunk thriller for PS4. Of course, by the end of the night everybody was gibbering about the console itself, so the PlayStation Blog caught up with developer Ready at Dawn to get under 1886's grimy surface streets.

First off, it's a linear, third-person action adventure with some kind of shooting. It takes place in an alternate London which is even more gaga about the Industrial Revolution than usual--as indicated by the airships on its horizon and the big, clanking guns on its heroes' backs. But its historical divergences will be more Assassin's Creed than Crimson Skies.

"Because this game is based in the real world, we wanted to feed off that and use some of the events, the people and the stuff that existed in that time to accentuate and bring our IP into a world that is believable," Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya said.

Weerasuriya repeatedly referred to The Order as a "filmic experience," to the extent that it incorporates multiple camera lenses and grain effects.

"Games have a tendency sometimes to be too clean and crisp," he said. "We thrive in the dirt. We just love the fact that it feels dirty. It’s filmed in a very realistic way."

Ready At Dawn is best known for its PSP God of War titles Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. We'll see what it can do with a new world and a powerful home console.

Xbox One doesn't include a packed-in headset accessory, Microsoft has confirmed. The tech titan told Ars Technica that the next-gen consoles' official monaural headset, which plugs into an Xbox One controller much like its 360 predecessor, is sold separately.

For comparison's sake, PS4 comes bundled with a monaural earbud and in-line microphone. On the other hand, it doesn't come with the Kinect equivalent PlayStation Eye (sold separately for $60), while Xbox One packs in its camera-and-microphone device. Microsoft has stressed Kinect's ability to isolate voices from background noise and positioned it as a all-in-one solution for video and audio chatting.

If you'd prefer your whole living room doesn't hear the mind-boggling awfulness of Xbox Live voice chat, however, you're welcome to buy your own basic headset or (likely pricier) officially sanctioned third-party model.

The official Xbox 360 headset costs $20 if it doesn't come in your preferred bundle, so we'd expect its successor to retail around there.

It begs the crap out of me that both Sony and Microsoft are taking a step backwards when it comes to headsets. I don't get what's the problem. It really seems that people complain about everything even about peripherals that have been rendered near useless.Kinect has a built in microphone. As for the speakers, one can always connect the headphones directly to the tv ,or indirectly via adapter. There you go problem solved . The other way is to mute those who are making noise (something one already does even with a headset). Reply Report

Glad I'm going the PS4 route this time. The ridiculous amount of douchebags playing music or having movies on during lobby/games was ridiculous. Now that Kinect is mandatory I imagine this problem to be ten fold worse. MS can talk all they want about Kinect isolating noises. I don't buy it. I have been on the other end of a chat with a person using the first connect and it was bad. MS fed us so much bullshit about the first one I'm not willing to give them another chance. Reply Report

But you are not realizing that almost every person on a console/PC will use a headset. The same cannot be said for the Kinect, for example, or the Playstation eye. Forcing the Kinect/eye on people will only force it to collect dust. Monetary value in this case simply does not matter. Give me a $20 headset for free and ill use it every time I boot up that system. Give me a $100 camera (or whatever it really cost) and I will use it less. Reply Report

Codemasters teases 'new' rally game using very familiar imagery

Legendary driving game developer Codemasters is planning to reveal another rally game tomorrow, if Twitter teases are to be believed. What's more, the 'new' game appears to have close ties to the early days of the UK studio's much-loved Colin McRae branded series.

Appearing on the Twitter feed of Codemasters' Rich Eddy today, the simple teaser image in question consists of a rally car and the text "thursday | june | 27". But if that typography seems both off-kilter and a little familiar, then it's probably not an accident.

Series fans have noticed that the font, presentation and featured car are all identical to those used on the cover of Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on the PS1 and PC. It's interesting that the imagery harks back to the original series rather than the later Dirt continuation, but whether this means that the game revealed tomorrow will be a follow-up, a remake or a re-release is anyone's guess at the moment. All three are definite possibilities.

More news as we get it. Which will probably be tomorrow.

Frostbite 3 flexes in new Battlefield 4 video

Trees. Waves. Boats. Cars. Helicopters. Levolution. All of it rendered in gobsmacking detail courtesy of the Frostbite 3 engine and, if Electronic Arts' push to move just about all of its AAA franchises onto the system is any indication, we'll be seeing plenty of it.

Learn more about the engine behind Battlefield 4 in this in-depth video from EA.

That's a lot of footage of Battlefield 4, but remember that Frostbite 3 is also powering Need for Speed: Rivals, Command & Conquer, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and the next Mass Effect, to name a few.

So far, that doesn't look like a bad thing at all.

Australian classification body bans Saints Row IV

Saints Row IV has been refused classification in Australia, barring it from release in its current form. However, publisher Deep Silver has told us that developer Volition is making alterations to offending content in a bid to secure a release in the country.

Australia's ratings body said in a statement: "In the Board's opinion, Saints Row IV includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context. In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

The game is the first to be denied a rating under Australia’s Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games, which came into effect on January 1 2013. Prior to that, the country didn’t have an adult category for computer games. Donald McDonald, acting director of the Classification Board, said: "Apart from today's decision, since the beginning of the year, the Board has classified 17 games R 18+ under the new guidelines."

Deep Silver said in a statement today: "Volition, the developer, are reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence without reducing the outlandish gameplay that Saints Row fans know and love. Saints Row IV has been awarded PEGI 18 and ESRB M ratings where fans can enjoy their time in Steelport as originally intended."

Saints Row 4 is set for release on August 20 in North America and August 23 in Europe. Get our most recent impressions of the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game in this preview from E3 earlier this month.
