E3 is still fresh in the memory, but Sony has already turned its attention to Europe’s biggest games convention, Gamescom, which takes place from August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany. While the firm’s PS4 reveal event in February was accompanied by the announcement of games including Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Driveclub, completely new first party software was notably absent at E3, excluding Ready At Dawn’s The Order: 1886.
In an interview with Gamereactor, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan said the company wanted to hold back some surprises for August’s German trade show. "We very consciously at the [PS4 reveal] event in New York on February 20 showed a lot of software, a lot of first party software. What we did at E3 was really show some updates to those games and introduce The Order: 1886,” he said.
"There's a lot [of games] coming," Ryan added. "I'm sure you heard from Shuhei [Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios] that he has, just from his studios, 30 games in development. 20 are going to ship within the first year of the console's life and of those 12 are new IPs, so there's a lot going on. It's just that we need to keep stuff back. We've got Gamescom for us Europeans and we need something to show at Gamescom."
Sony revealed the actual PS4 hardware for the first time during its E3 press conference, where it also announced a Christmas release date in Europe and the US and a PS4 price of £349 / €399 / $399. Multiple European retailers recently began listing the PS4 launch date as November 13, 2013 although Sony told us the suggested release date was “pure speculation”.
The Last of Us is holding firm at the top of the UK sales charts for a second week running. It's unusual for a single-format game to stay at the summit for multiple weeks, but then again, The Last of Us is a bit special as our review will tell you. For a second week, Animal Crossing: New Leaf retains the number two spot.
Tellingly, there are no new entries to the top 20 this week. We assume everyone in the UK is outside enjoying all the lovely weath... oh wait. Perhaps the lack of fresh games explains why Max Payne 3 is sat at number five, and Far Cry 3 is at seven. Here's the full break-down.
1. The Last Of Us 2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3. FIFA 13 4. Tomb Raider 5. Max Payne 3 6. Call Of Duty: Black Ops II 7. Far Cry 3 8. Injustice: Gods Among Us 9. Assassin’s Creed III 10. Grid 2 11. We said in our Joe Danger 2: The Movie review: “Joe Danger 2: The Movie succeeds in retaining the raw fun that made the original game great while amping up the excitement and variety.”
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime invites us into his well-appointed home in this new official video. He takes us through his spacious living room, his well-stocked kitchen, and even his traditional Japanese-styled bedroom.
Oh, and it's in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Steer clear if you're afraid of Full Home Expansion/Decoration spoilers.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf came out on June 9 in the U.S., breaking eShop day-one sales records. And here's Reggie Fils-Aime, breaking our tenuous belief that we could somehow live without Reggie-face bedsheets.
Well, Hotline Miami didn't quite make its spring release window (happy summer, northern hemisphere-ers!) for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, but we can't stay mad at it. Publisher Devolver Digital announced on the PlayStation Blog today that the hyper-violent top-down twitchy shooter will hit Sony's platforms on June 25.
Hotline Miami will cost $10, the same as its price on PC, and is a cross-buy title--meaning if you buy it on PS3, you also get it for Vita, and vice versa. Both versions come with trophies and leaderboards, and Vita players can even enable touch-based lock-on targeting if they so desire.
Finally, PS3 and Vita players can unlock an exclusive new mask: Russell, the raging bull. Russell doesn't add alter the gameplay, but he does give Hotline Miami's distorted visual filter a stark monochromatic motif (aside from the blood, of course).
Check out the upcoming Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number for more glitzy, gorey goodness.
