According to a news report from MCV, the used games market will continue to exist--but Microsoft and publishers will be getting a slice of the used sales pie.

This information was provided by anonymous retail sources, who say that Microsoft "briefed key retail partners on how it intends to take ownership of the pre-owned market." Here's an example of how the system works, as posted on MCV:

"A gamer walks into a retailer and hands over the game they wish to sell. This will only be possible at retailers who have agreed to Microsoft’s T&Cs and more importantly integrated Microsoft’s cloud-based Azure pre-owned system into its own.

"The game is then registered as having been traded-in on Microsoft’s system. The consumer who handed it over will subsequently see the game wiped from their account – hence the until now ambiguous claim from Phil Harrison that the Xbox One would have to ‘check in’ to Microsoft’s servers every 24 hours.

"The retailer can then sell the pre-owned game at whatever price they like, although as part of the system the publisher of the title in question will automatically receive a percentage cut of the sale. As will Microsoft. The retailer will pocket the rest."

Unconfirmed reports on UK blog consoledeals.co.uk suggest that used game retailers may pocket as little as 10 percent of the sale, leaving us wondering how brick and mortar stores will sustain overhead costs, let alone stay in business.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

As bad as the Xbone is screwing consumers at least it's not limiting itself to them. Gamestop and the like have been unrelentingly ripping off customers who trade in games for years. Buying games for less than ten dollars then selling them $5 cheaper than new and earning huge margins. I hope they re-evaluate their business strategy or are shut down. Reply Report

I am not happy with many of game stops practices, but if it wasn't for them (and similar companies) we wouldn't be getting $30 for a game we bought for $60. We would be getting $0.With that said, there are plenty of games I have bought used when I was just browsing through the store, and gone on to buy the next release full price because I liked the used one. This will no longer happen for me. And what makes this any different from any used item? Should it be illegal to sell anything used? If it is good enough for games it is good enough for cars, houses, and clothes. The whole idea is ridiculous. Reply Report

I honestly don't know why some of these a$$clowns on here that want to defend the "publishers" and bash retailers think they have something to add to the discussion. I picture them with a beret and an e-cigarette and a goatee at a party trying to sound intellectual.1) When you are paying money for something you are the customer, and it is your part to actually negotiate your interests not the provider. And if you can't do that, please become my customer, because I love people like you. I can increase my charges and you keep thinking you are getting better product/service just because you are paying more. 2) Everyone who is benefiting under this new arrangement is actually a middleman. You demonize one middleman (Gamestop) for creating a marketplace that provides a useful service to many people. If you don't like their rates or profit margin, don't do business there. But obviously many people must find it useful, as many do buy from there.2b) From a "game" standpoint, MS is also a middleman. And the publisher is too. The publisher is like the record label in music. They don't make $#1t. They are as much a middleman as Gamestop or Best Buy. Haven't you noticed some of the comedy games make fun of the dynamic between dev and publisher? If not, go play Space Quest 3.3) The dev, who does all the work, they get nothing out of this. They only get what the publisher will allow to trickle down. Oh, and don't most people these days demonize trickle down economics, saying it doesn't trickle down at all?So really, you are all "hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, go MS...way to cut Gamestop out of the mix", when all you are doing is supporting a bunch of fat, lazy execs, who are nothing more than brokers, getting fatter and lazier. And you feel all smug because you can puff away at that e-cig at the next party and pretend to educate people about economic details you have no clue about yourself. But the funny thing is, many of us wake up the next day to go to do real business, and you are waking up to trade that beret for a visor and go flip burgers for the day. Reply Report

Listen up GAME, Amazon, Gamestation, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and all you large retailers who make a large amount of revenue from used games... if you refuse to stock the Xbox One until Microsoft reverse this policy, then come release time Microsoft will very quickly get rid of this used game lock. I am not even going to try to predict how the money will flow here because economics is something I'm only basically versed in. However, I can say I hardly ever buy used games anymore seeing as for consoles I buy the big AAA's only and I get them new (getting more into PC) , and for handhelds it's not an issue of course since i just have the 3ds and vita, while I try other things on PC. So I guess this doesn't really affect me directly right now and maybe it never will. Everyone's pissed with micro right now but after thinking about it a bit more and more regarding myself personally rather than their practices in general, I may not be so opposed to getting the one. I think I'd like one all in all, and I'll probably get the ps4 too at some point as well as a wii u when N has rolled out plenty of its big guns. Call me self centered I guess, but my one purchase won't change the industry so I might as well enjoy it all in the now, now that I think about it. Reply Report

AtlanteanLancer - May 24, 2013 3:34 p.m.

So they're trying to keep the re-sale model similar on the surface, but change it under the hood. a clever way to gradually undermine brick&mortar retailers.mostly things stay the same, EXCEPT, now the retailer no longer gets the whole pie when re-selling, they get10% ( they sure as hell dont deserve 100% of an intellectual service they didnt produce), it's fair that they get a share for simply storing the disc until a buyer arrives.the reason market doesn't go fully digital is that web access isn't so robust in all placesAnd in a few years they'll lose that as well.and the reason MS is even remotely trying to keep face with the retailers is because they sell the actual Xbox MACHINE, meaning they can play the revenge game and limit shelf-space and in-house advertising.the PC has no such qualms it is an ubiquitous piece of hardware, you can't wage war against it.As it is now the games have to be 60dollars to compensate for sales lost by the 2nd hand market, and of course for the extremely idiotic wasteful budgeting practices of publishers who want to be the next call of duty, mo-capping dogs, hiring celebrities and spending millions on advertising.Suma sumarum: If the retailers lose out, either MS/publishers can hoard the loot or the gamers can get a better deal then increase sales.and if we dont win in all this, we can always be smart enough and migrate for competition.nuff' said Reply Report

ParagonT - May 24, 2013 10:29 p.m.

( they sure as hell dont deserve 100% of an intellectual service they didnt produce)Companies do not deserve more money from a product that cost less money to make as well although, but marketing is not really fair in general. Labor vs value. So I think that second hand retailers getting full price is totally valid personally. But I doubt were going to come out ahead in this. I have to pay more for my games, therefor I will buy less new games in general to compensate for the increase of having to buy at full retail price. I get less games, they get more money to either hoard, or give to publishers (not developers). I doubt they will cut us some slack. The second hand market is a blessing to me as a consumer. Your argument has merit save three things: 1.The retail service does have a right to profit, they are buying the "goods" from the gamers and re-selling it to other gamers, sure there assholes about it and they stiff you on prices, but it's not the most imoral business scheme iv'e seen.2.You mentioned the PC, just .... you shouldn't do that. Everyone either likes the PC or they don't but when you bring it up it just pisses people off and they have to chose sides.3.You ended it on "nuff' said" That's not a way to end an argument, a sentence, or even an insult. the fact they had to make a deal with retailers like this is WORSE!why?because this way they HAVE to force you to get the X1 to dial home to a MS server, every 24 hours . you're treated like a criminal on probation. HORRIBLE !otherwise you could install the game, play without the disc, then immediately sell it to the retailerthey should've just cut the 2nd hand retailing altogether and be done with it.like this we get the shittiest elements of both worlds , the Steam and the console. Yes I agree with you there, hell I said the same thing a few comments down the line on this very page, but still you can't go and burn Gamestop at the stake just because it's got a habit of letting you buy a game for sixty bucks walk out the door turn around and give you thirty for it not a minute later. Like I said it's wrong of them to do that but there are worse businesses out there that do worse things. The fact that they now have to give money to the producers of these games may seem like a victory to anyone who doesn't like Gamestop, it's like the school yard bully is receiving a scolding, you can cheer all you like but it's only because he took your lunch money the other day that you cheering in the first place. What's worse is that they don't deserve this, sure they deserve some pretty nasty things for what they do, but not this. Reply Report

Used games dont die AND publishers finally get a cut of the profits from THEIR OWN re-sold games. AtlanteanLancer put it pretty well: "mostly things stay the same, EXCEPT, now the retailer no longer gets the whole pie when re-selling, they get10% ( they sure as hell dont deserve 100% of an intellectual service they didnt produce), it's fair that they get a share for simply storing the disc until a buyer arrives." Yes but that's dumb and he didn't put it in a good way. T_T What your basically saying is that it wasn't enough they got the full price when the product got bought the first time, they should also be given money when a third party buys the product (with their own money) and sells it for a profit. So unless the industries want to start shelling out an allowance to game stop to buy the games and re-sell them so they can give a cut to the devs, then it doesn't work out. Another analogy in case your thick or just see red because gamestop just bought a game from you for a nickle, imagine if you will a car dealership, say Ford, Someone just bought a mustang, they drive it around then end up selling it to a used car dealer for a safer car, that used car dealer then turns around and sell that mustang for a profit, is he now going to go and give Ford some cash? Does Ford deserve some cash in this transaction they were not apart of? Reply Report

Explore The Witness in PS4 developer video

One of the greatest surprises of the PlayStation 4's reveal event was Jonathan Blow. We weren't expecting the creator of Braid to walk on stage, show a trailer of his new game The Witness, and say it would premiere on PS4.

Blow talks about what drew him to the platform in this new "Conversations with Creators" video from PlayStation, and debuts some new footage of the open-world puzzle game.

Blow doesn't actually speak about Sony very much here. But if that reflects on the company's approach to The Witness (i.e, just make the game you want to make and we'll put it on our console), that's a good sign.

Sony Europe advert says “PS4 coming 2013”

An advert placed by Sony in today’s UK Metro newspaper has raised hopes of the European PS4 release date falling in 2013. It reads: "Now is the time. The world's greatest players are going to entertain, create and amaze on the ultimate stage. This year a new generation will push the boundaries of play and share in moments of wonder. This year players will become legends. PS4. Coming 2013."

Sony announced PS4 in February, but to date it has only officially confirmed plans to launch the system this holiday in at least one of Europe, the US and Japan. An Edge report prior to the console’s announcement claimed PS4 would launch in the US and Japan in late 2013 and in Europe in early 2014, citing complexities involved in distribution in the continent. More recently, a Sony insider told CVG that the platform holder has identified Europe as a high-priority territory in the next-gen sales race and will ensure PS4's launch is not delayed into 2014.

In a statement provided to Edge, Sony played down the significance of today's PS4 advert in Metro: "We announced at the PlayStation Meeting event on Feb 20th that PS4 would be coming in 2013… the adverts are simply re-stating that message. More information about PS4 and all PlayStation Platforms will be announced at E3.”

Sony has yet to show PS4’s form factor, but it recently released a console teaser trailer ahead of an expected hardware reveal at its E3 press conference on June 10. Earlier this week, Microsoft took the wraps off its Xbox 360 successor and PS4 rival, Xbox One, which will launch around the world “later this year”.

Ninja Theory's next project is F2P mobile game Fightback

Ninja Theory revealed its latest action-packed project this week. After a tour on PS3 and Xbox 360 with Heavenly Sword and DmC: Devil May Cry, Ninja Theory is going mobile with Fightback.

The free-to-play game borrows an '80s action movie aesthetic to complement its touch-based melee combat and gunplay. Fightback is being published by EA-owned Chillingo.

"Mobile and tablet gaming is a phenomenon that we just couldn’t ignore as a studio and we’re very proud to be working with one of the industry’s heavyweights on bringing Fightback to market," Ninja Theory Product Manager Dominic Matthews said in a statement. "Ninja Theory has always strived for the highest production values and that absolutely remains the case in this exciting new space."

Fightback will hit iOS and Android this summer.

Epic Mickey 2 hits Vita this June

Sony has confirmed a June 18 US release date for the Vita version of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two. The handheld edition of the platformer lets players control paint, thinner and Oswald’s electric beam with the touch screen, which is also used to give instructions to AI and navigate menus. Tilt controls are used for the camera and driving, while there’s a Wi-Fi co-op mode for local players.

Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “We think that Epic Mickey 2 will be a great addition to the ever-growing games line-up on PS Vita, and know that we’re continually searching for the best games - whether brand new titles or ones existing already on PS3 - to bring to PS Vita gamers everywhere.”

We were fairly critical of the PS3 version of the game in our Epic Mickey 2 review, but hopefully some of the technical issues have been cleared up in the port. It’s unclear who has put the handheld version together, as series creator Junction Point Studios closed in January.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will get a second chance for a first impression on August 27. The rebuilt MMORPG will hit both PC and PS3 simultaneously.

The standard version will cost $30 on PC, or $40 on PS3. A collector's edition which includes a hardcover art book, special videos and music, collectible art cards, an account security token, and in-game bonus items will go for $70 on PC and $80 on PS3.

You can download the PC version for free if you were one of those unfortunate souls who bought the original FFXIV. No free PS3 version, seeing as the PS3 version never actually came out.

The game is still subscription based at $13 a month, though new accounts receive a 30-day trial period. The beta is free and still accepting applications for sessions this summer.

Sometimes the short term memory of gamers/fanboys baffles me. It's kinda stunning to see a rather large amount of people commenting on this of how excited they are and they can't wait to play it... Which, look, I get being cautiously optimistic, or wanting to check it out if you're into MMOs and Final Fantasy, but it's as if the entire catastrophe of the FFXIV launch had never happened, so much so that people are willing to pay money for it before even KNOWING if it'll be good this time around, or if they'll get screwed once again >_>; Reply Report

I honestly can't speak for everyone but I know a lot of people are speaking from experience in the beta. It's not that XIV never happened, it very much did and it was bad, but this isn't the same XIV. You have to understand that the entire game has been reworked from the ground up; new engine, new servers, new maps and environments, all new questing system and a completely reworked combat system. It has nothing in common with the horrible first launch outside of the name and the most basic principles like races and such. It's not about being a fanboy, it's about being excited for a game you're looking forward to. By the same token I could ask you why you're being so negative regarding a product you seem to know very little about. Reply Report

This ^If my time with the beta is indicative of the game as a whole, it's an infinitely better game than 14 was at launch. Reply Report

BladedFalcon - May 23, 2013 1:55 p.m.

Okay, a few things:If I remember correctly, most of the people that had played the beta for the original FFXIV were also raving that it was fantastic, and even some sites commented as much. So forgive me if positive reactions from the beta isn't enough to erase my skepticism.Secondly, if they changed virtually everything, why not change the name as well? If they chose to keep calling it FFXIV, you can't really blame me, nor anyone else for always comparing and hold the stigma that the original has on the name. And if I'm being negative, is because Square has brought this upon themselves. Again, if they were making a different game altogether, calling it FFXIV still is a baffling decision that will do the new game no favors at all. It benefits them in no way because the brand recognition in this case is VERY negative. So even if I'm being unfair in distrusting the new game itself, it's not my fault that Square chose to go trough this route. Reply Report

I totally understand the skepticism. I don't mean to imply that I have none myself--I only played for ~30 hours or so, which is next to nothing in an MMO. The monthly fee, though... that I find a bit vexing Reply Report

The beta from the original did not progress into anything; that was the problem. For a beta it was good, but it never changed. What we got at launch was still a beta. There were a bunch of half measures and "sort of but not quite" ideas that were floating around and supposedly going to be implemented that we never saw. This time around the beta in and of itself is already a playable and fun game. As far as the name goes, I don't know. They added "A Realm Reborn" to signify it's a reboot, and I'm guessing they didn't want to just scrap a numeric entry in the franchise. Not sure if it was a good or a bad call, but it is what it is. I assume they're hoping the fans who have been following the changes and word of mouth will help to counter the stigma of the original. Hell, they've released almost everything to do with this game via video format by now, so if you look for it it's not like anything about this game is a secret. Here's the thing; I don't blame you for skepticism, it's warranted after the failure of the first launch. What I don't like is that you're coming into this game which you obviously know very little about and bashing it just for existing while at the same time chastising those of us who have been following it and are actually excited for it. It's becoming the "cool thing" to hate on Square-Enix, which means that even if they come out with a promising game everyone trashes it just because it's from SE. I'm not convinced how fair that is. Has SE made some bad decisions? Sure. Does that mean that everything that they're doing right now is destined to fail and be terrible? I don't think so. Reply Report

Yes, that's another thing, far as I can tell, the monthly fee RPG is dying left and right, and yet you have this game, which not only it's charging an initial cost of admission, but a monthly fee right out of the gate... Which to me feels like the least inviting thing they could do, specially considering that being attached to the FF XIV fiasco, you would THINK they'd want to make it so people can check it out without paying first >_>; Reply Report

Fair enough, you're right in the sense that just because they have been screwing up left and right lately, that doesn't mean they can't actually make something good anymore. Of course they can. And note that from the beginning of my first post, I said "It's entirely okay to want to check the game out, or be cautiously optimistic". If I was all about blind hate, I wouldn't have said that, now would I? ;)Here's the thing, it's not the "cool" thing to hate on square-enix, at least, not in the sense you're making it sound. They have earned every single bit of animosity for the last years considering that all the later entries for the FF franchise have been underwhelming or mixed at best, and the one branch that consistently makes good games for them (Eidos) gets now blamed for the low sales and financial woes of the company. So make no mistake, Square deserves every single bit of scorn it gets.Lastly, I gotta recognize, I don't have a beef with you, nor with any of you that have played the demo and have genuinely enjoyed the game, and know exactly what you're getting for. (Or at least, what you think you'll get based on the demo.) But read the comments in a few other sites, specially on IGN, and tell me that the majority of those people don't sound like they are blindly getting excited for no reason other than they are fans, and probably haven't even tried the demo. THOSE are the people for which my original post was aimed for. Reply Report

Fair enough. I honestly don't frequent IGN (one of the lowest quality game news sites out there if you ask me) so I haven't been keeping up on the commentary behind XIV over there. I only really frequent GR and Giant Bomb. Your final statement is totally reasonable, however, if there are fans just spewing over this game without having any knowledge about it.As someone who's genuinely excited for this game to launch I guess I'm just tired of seeing it get bashed every time it's mentioned. I swear, anytime you see this game blip on GR the comments are pretty much along the lines of what you and Collander initially wrote. Maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate or maybe I want to put some good words behind this project that Yoshida is sweating to bring back to life. *shrug*Finally, I might be mistaken on this but hasn't SE recently acknowledged that their western branches are the only ones succeeding, and their in-house franchises need to be doing better? I remember reading that but I can't recall from where. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. Either way, I don't do "internet beef" with random anonymous people I don't know, it's so pointless. So no worries, for the most part I always enjoy your commentary on the site and you're generally well informed regarding your opinions (I agree with your opinions of the Xbox One 100%, for example) so I've got nothing against you. Just standing up for a game I see some promise in. :) Reply Report

Yeah, I don't rely on IGN for actual opinions or reviews at all, I just check it out because whether we like it or not, they're a big company with big resources and do get a ton of info and news faster than most sites, this one included, but yeah I also suppose I have no one to blame but myself if I go down the den of stupidity and despair that is the comments section there >>;And well, you're in your every right to defend a game you believe in, specially when you have good reasons and info to defend it as such. I definitely agree that a lot of my animosity towards the project has to do more with how Squeenix has been handling things, and less to do with the game itself, which IS unfair. As for your Square comments... Well, this article should say it all for you:http://www.gamesradar.com/square-enix-reveals-missed-sales-potential-tomb-raider/I mean... It's pretty clear to me that they either have been mismanaging money terribly if they need those games to make that much money in order to be profitable... (I mean, FUCK, Tomb raider sold more than 4 million in a month, how is that NOT good enough for anyone anymore??) OR they are just shifting the blame to Eidos in order to cover for the expense of their Japanese projects... Which, I'm sorry, it also seems very likely considering that none of their latest Japanese games have sold nearly as well as tomb raider has. Hell, so far,FFXIII-2 didn't even sell half of what TR made in that month. So with that in mind, I think you could see why I have a chip on my shoulder when it comes to Square, no?Anyway, thank you for listening and responding ^^ I know sometimes I may tend to come off as high strung and a bit of an ass, but truth is I also don't seek to make enemies or anything XD I just enjoy a good discussion when I can get one ^^; And well, it's been cool talking to you because as many others here have proven to be, you're very reasonable even if we have differing opinions in some stuff. That, and you did knock some sense into me regarding this game, I'll keep attacking square whenever they deserve it, but if a project of them seems like it's genuinely trying, then I shouldn't take it out on that. So thanks for that, and I'll see you around ^^ Reply Report

I am so excited for the re-release of this game. The things they have done to this since they brought down the original XIV are truly incredible. It's now shaping up to be one of the most beautiful MMO's I've seen available. This is the game I've been waiting for since I left FFXI years ago. It's hard to believe it even came from the same game, given how much of a travesty the first launch was. Yoshida really went overtime on this project to turn it into the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes. It's a shame the subscription fee and the lackluster performance of the original will deter so many people from experiencing this fantastic reboot. This really has turned into a game worth playing. Reply Report
